CHESTER — There aren’t many things Chester’s Jacy Wolf hasn't achieved on the volleyball court.

The 5-foot-6 senior outside hitter/setter has played a cornerstone role for the past six seasons, guiding the Lady Flyers to the past four state championship games, winning each of the past three.

This season, Chester is off to 17-4 start and currently ranked No. 2 in latest Class B prep media volleyball poll. Wolf is the lone returning starter from a year ago and the only senior for the Lady Flyers, but her experience and leadership has helped the new players step into bigger roles.

"In practice we always would play them so they've always gotten better by playing our team last year but I think they trust me a lot, the younger girls do,” Wolf said. “I've kind of been a leader the past couple years, so nothing is really new there in just how they trust me and just trust what I'm telling them to do."

Chester coach Jean O’Hara added how Wolf’s calming presence on the court has especially helped guide Chester this season.

“I think that calmness has really been a huge benefit for us on the court instead of, anybody being scared or upset or anything like that, which your emotions could let you do,” O’Hara said. “Jacy is very much a calm presence on the court, and that's been huge for our kids this year."

But it’s not just Wolf’s leadership that has made the biggest difference. Whether it’s on her swings or dishing out assists, Wolf has taken control of the Chester offense.

This season, Wolf leads the team in kills (268), aces (31), assists (287) and is second in digs (282). For her career, Wolf has totaled 1,637 kills, 1,714 assists and recently surpassed the 2,000 digs mark on Sept. 29 against Deubrook Area. She now sits with 2,073 career digs.

While reaching career high averages per set in both kills (4.6) and assists (4.9), the five-year starter says her experience playing both spots has aided with her continued success.

"I think it really helps just like being in the groove of things. I've been doing these two positions for multiple years, so I think it helps."

But her favorite spot is as an outside hitter. Despite being undersized, she says the hitting has always came more natural and allows her to take over games.

"Since eighth grade I've been the outside hitter,” Wolf said. “I've been working on a lot of vertical workouts since I've been in middle school so that's really helped and just learning how to use the block and seeing where the defense has also helped too."

O’Hara also credited Wolf’s powerful swings with her incredible athleticism that’s allowed the two-time all-stater to succeed on the court.

“She can hit a ball 50 miles an hour, and in Class B, that's a tough ball to defend,” O’Hara said of Wolf. “She can put some serious heat on a ball when that ball is in the right place, and she is so fast. When you're a :14.9 hurdler, you've got some pretty good quick twitch muscles. Jacy can make a great play out of a not great ball, and Jacy can hustle and get a ball that normally might be out of play and unreachable, and somehow, she’s just there, and she makes it look effortless.”

In Wolf’s nearly six years at the varsity level, she’s helped Chester accrue a record of 171-21, including five straight trips the state tournament with a consolation championship, a runner-up finish and three-straight Class B state titles.

But Wolf and the Lady Flyers are eyeing a fourth straight title as they gear up for the postseason next month.

“That's the dream, to hopefully end my career with a win,” Wolf said.

"I think we just keep getting better every day when we go to practice. We're working on little things in practice and just becoming like an overall better team, and I think we're pushing towards just playing our best ball when it matters most and that's in November."

Wolf is a four-sport athlete who also competes in basketball, softball and track and field. An all-stater in both basketball and softball, Wolf earned third place in the 100-meter hurdles and took second in the 300-meter hurdles at the state track meet as a junior. She was also part of Chester’s 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams that took third and sixth place, respectively.

Wolf has no college plans as of yet, but hopes to continue her volleyball, track, or both careers at the next level while becoming a medical or commercial pilot.

While she closes out her high school volleyball career, Wolf is grateful for the time she’s had as a Lady Flyer.

"It's really meant a lot,” Wolf said of Chester volleyball. “We're like a big family and I really enjoy coming in every day to the gym and being with my teammates and of course the coaches too."

“A kid like that is just something I think every coach, dreams of, looks forward to having, et cetera,” O’Hara said. “There are probably not enough words to say how it feels to be able to coach a kid like that. But I think Jacy's best attribute is her ability to make others better.

“She's a gift to have, she's quite a player and I'm certainly glad she wears red and white."
