Aug. 6 Class B amateur baseball roundup - Dell Rapids Mudcats blank Merchants in tourney action

Dell Rapids Mudcats 7, Northville Merchants 0

MITCHELL — Dalton Allen and Dalton Lehnen combined to throw a two-hit shutout to lift the Dell Rapids Mudcats to a Class B state amateur baseball tournament win on Saturday at Cadwell Park. 

Allen lasted the first six innings, giving up one hit, three walks and struck out five batters for the win. Lehnen struck out seven batters, allowed one hit and zero walks in three relief innings. 

Offensively, Trevor Freudenthal logged two hits and two RBI. Chad Hunt added two hits, while Travis Peters added an RBI. Grant Olson added a hit. Kris Regas, Logan Stone and Weston Hansen each had hits. 

Dell Rapids will play either Volga or Larchwood in the next round on Tuesday at Cadwell Park. 

Northville’s Max Waltman and Travis Paulsen each had hits. Garrett Knox took the loss after allowing six hits, seven runs (four earned), seven walks and struck out seven batters in the complete-game performance. 


Larchwood Diamonds (Iowa) 3, Volga Cormorants 2 (10 innings) 

MITCHELL — Cody Groskruetz’s walk-off double lifted Larchwood, Iowa, to a Class B state amateur baseball tournament win over Volga on Saturday at Cadwell Park and Drake Field. 

Micah Linn led Larchwood with three hits and drove in a run. Eric McLauflin added two hits, while Mitch Peschon and Keaton Grevengoed each had hits. Linn and Peschon drove in runs. Mitch Van Beek earned the win after allowing two hits, three walks, zero runs and struck out three batters in 4.1 relief innings.

Volga’s Zack Puetz recorded two hits, while Parker Puetz, Josh Nelson and Damien Danziesen each had hits. Parker Puetz lasted the first five innings, allowing three hits and one earned run on 68 pitches. 

Nicolai Arbach took the loss after giving up five hits, two earned runs, three walks and struck out three batters in four relief innings.  


Lake Norden Lakers 5, Freeman Blacksox 3

MITCHELL — Jordon Johnson fanned 13 batters to power Lake Norden to a Class B state amateur baseball tournament win over Freeman on Saturday at Cadwell Park. 

Johnson scattered eight hits, allowed zero earned runs and two walks on 146 pitches. Mick Tulson and Jesse VanOverbeke had two hits apiece. Jackson Noem, Tony Campbell, Mitchell Noem, David Novak and Brent Griffith each had hits. VanOverbeke drove in two runs. 

Freeman’s Jake Weier had a team-high three hits. Phil Madsen, Owen Feser, Bailey Sage, Michael Drotzman and Trey Christensen each had hits. Blake Schroedermeier struck out nine batters, allowed four hits, one earned run and walked one batter in his 5.2-inning start. Drotzman struck out six batters, allowed six hits, three unearned runs and zero walks in 3.1 relief innings to take the loss.

Winner/Colome Pheasants 16, Redfield Pheasants 1 (7 innings)

MITCHELL — Winner/Colome erupted for 17 hits and cruised to a Class B state amateur baseball win on Saturday at Cadwell Park. 

Austin Calhoon led Winner/Colome with four hits and two RBI. Austin Richey and Luke Bamberg added three hits apiece, while Richey drove in two runs. Drew DeMers and Dillon Lambley had two hits apiece, while DeMers drove in three runs. 

Derek Graesser drove in three runs, while Chandler Bakely and Pierce Nelson each had a hit. Graesser earned the win, striking out nine batters, giving up one hit and walked one batter in his five-inning start. 

Redfield’s Barrett Wren, Rafael Clemente and Keith Jandel each logged a hit. Tommy Gregg took the loss after giving up eight earned runs and eight hits in his 1.1-inning start.
