Boys state cross-country roundup: Bison's Lane Krautschun earns Class B boys title

SIOUX FALLS -- Miller won its first-ever boys cross-country title on Saturday in the Class B championship. 

The Rustlers recorded 25 points and finished 23 points ahead of second-place Northwestern (48). Miller’s Pierce Baumberger (16:58.52) and Alex Schumacher (17:14.13) paced the team title with third and fourth-place finishes, respectively.

Bison’s Lane Krautschun (16:35.82) was the individual medalist, finishing 18 seconds ahead of second-place Josiah Schroeder of Canistota. Potter County’s Nicholas Schlachter (17:17.71) rounded out the top-five. 

Freeman Academy/Marion (51), Philip (56) and Kimball/White Lake (58) rounded out the top-five team standings.

Sioux Falls Christian boys earn three-peat in Class A

SIOUX FALLS -- Sioux Falls Christian captured its third consecutive Class A boys cross-country title on Saturday.

The Chargers scored 26 points and finished 31 points ahead of second-place Custer (57). Milbank (69), Belle Fourche (78) and Hill City (113) rounded out the top-five.

Individually, Belle Fourche’s Sawyer Clarkson won his second title in three seasons, finishing in 15:27.13. He also won the 2019 state championship. 

Milbank’s Nick Batchelor (16:07.50) placed second, while Sioux Falls Christian’s Daniel Colby (16:28.23) captured third place. Sioux Falls Christian’s Isaac Davelaar (16:40.04) and Custer’s Miles Ellman (16:41.69) rounded out the top-five.

Rapid City Stevens boys earn first title since 2004

SIOUX FALLS -- Rapid City Stevens ended a 16-year drought on Saturday.

The Raiders scored 77 points to secure their first Class AA cross-country championship since 2004. Stevens has also taken second in 2020 and 2018. 

Rapid City Stevens’ Simeon Birnbaum (15:48.64) claimed the individual championship to power the team title. Spearfish’s Keenan Urdiales (15:53.76) and Aberdeen Central’s Josh Martin (15:55.43) placed second and third, respectively. Harrisburg’s Soren Weeg (16:23.05) and Pierre’s Hayden Shaffer (16:23.40) rounded out the top-five. 

Harrisburg (103), Aberdeen Central (107), Pierre (130) and Sioux Falls Lincoln (143) rounded out the top-five.
