RAPID CITY -- Colman-Egan made some program history on Friday.

The No. 5 seeded Hawks topped No. 1 Platte-Geddes in a four-set Class B semifinal match at the Summit Arena. The set scores were 27-29, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-19.

As a result, the Hawks (26-7) advanced to the Class B state championship match for the first time in program history. Colman-Egan will play Warner or Faulkton Area for the state championship at 4 p.m. MT at the Summit Arena on Saturday.

“It feels amazing,” senior outside hitter Mackenzie Hemmer said. “Our team worked so hard. Everybody doubts us all the time and to be the underdogs, it feels so good and our team is so excited.”

On Friday, the Hawks and Black Panthers (33-4) locked horns in a tight four-set match, which featured 34 ties and 18 lead changes.

“I think just the adrenaline kept us going and we lost to them earlier in the season,” said Hemmer, who logged 13 kills, 11 digs and one solo block. “So we just needed to get it done.”

The first set, which featured 14 ties and nine lead changes, paved the way for the tight match. The Black Panthers broke away from a 27-27 tie with two straight points for the 1-0 lead. It was more of the same in the second set, which had 15 ties and seven lead changes. The set was tied at points 19-through-23 before Colman-Egan scored the final two points, evening up the match at 1-1.

The Hawks took an early 7-1 advantage in the third set and stymied a late run by the Black Panthers. Platte-Geddes, which trailed the entire set, got within 23-22 before the Hawks scored the final two points.

Colman-Egan again controlled the action in the fourth set, finishing on an 8-2 run to complete the victory.

“I think we’d get in a groove and we’d get playing as a team and talking and it just really helps,” Hemmer said.

Hailey Larson added 13 kills and 16 digs for the Hawks. Ava Mousel logged 18 digs and 21 assists. Daniela Lee posted 11 kills and 22 digs.

Platte-Geddes’ Cadence Van Zee and Karly VanDerWerff had 19 kills apiece. Van Zee recorded 23 digs, while Regan Hoffman had 14 kills and 18 digs. Avery DeVries finished with 16 digs and 48 assists, while Hadley Hanson posted 14 digs. Baleigh Nachtigal added 12 digs.
