DUPREE — Athletes from the northwestern part of South Dakota gathered over the weekend to compete in a high school regional rodeo. Over the course of two weekends, athletes needed to score at least three points in their events to qualify for the state high school finals that start Tuesday in Fort Pierre. 

Fruitdale’s Reece Reder scored 19 points to claim the bareback riding competition. In the saddle bronc, Smithwick’s Gabe Glines and New Underwood’s Eastan West each scored 15 points for top riding honors. Belle Fourche’s D’Angelo Garduna won the bull riding, scoring 10 points over the weekend. 

Eagle Butte’s Kashlin Bettelyoun scored 16 points in breakaway roping, edging Hadley Pihl of Buffalo (15). Hermosa’s Tegan Fite and Lantry’s Treg Thorsetenson earned the most team roping points while Josh Womack of Newcastle scored 19 points to win the tie-down roping competition. 

Other event winners were Newell’s Reata Hays and Buffalo’s Aspen Vining who each scored 17 points in the barrel racing. Faith’s Trey Fuller scored 20 points to win boys cutting with Spearfish’s Brylee Grubb scoring 18 points in the goat tying. Belle Fourche’s Chloe Crago scored 19 points in the girls cutting competition while Dawson Kautzman of Camp Crook scored 20 points in the reined cow horse competition. Long Valley’s Denton Good scored 18 points, tops in the steer wrestling competition.
