De Smet's Garry, Washington's Mwenentanda named Mr./Miss Basketball winners

De Smet’s Kalen Garry and Sioux Falls Washington’s Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda were named the 2022 South Dakota Mr. and Miss Basketball winners on Sunday. 

Garry is the first De Smet boys basketball player to receive the award. Mwenentanda is the third girls basketball player from Washington to receive the honor, joining Ann Pancoast (1980) and JoElle Byre (1981) as recipients.  


Garry, who will play basketball at South Dakota State University, averaged 21 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game this season. A four-time all-stater, Garry finished as De Smet’s all-time leading scorer with 2,093 career points. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard received the prestigious Spirit of Su award at the state tourney and was part of two straight Class B state championship teams. Garry was also named this year's South Dakota Gatorade boys basketball player of the year.

Mwenentanda, who will play basketball at the University of Texas, recorded 18 points, eight rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this season. She was a three-time all-stater and led Washington to the state championship as a junior. She scored her 1,000th career point this season. A 6-foot-2 forward, Mwenentanda was also this year's South Dakota Gatorade girls basketball player of the year. She is ranked as the nation’s No. 34 recruit in the Class of 2022 by HoopGurlz.
