Burke's Piper Hanson sweeps hurdle races at Corn Palace Relays

MITCHELL — Burke senior Piper Hanson had a big day at Saturday’s Corn Palace Relays. 

Hanson won the 100-meter hurdles (:15.49), the 300-meter hurdles (:48.06) and teamed up with Braelyn Duerfeldt, Brylie Pistulka and Kailee Frank to win the Class A 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (4:29.14).

Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Berkeley Engelland was a triple winner claiming the 100-meter dash (:12.74), the 200-meter dash (25.76) and running the fastest 400-meter dash in South Dakota this spring (:55.62). 

The Sioux Falls Christian girls picked up wins from Anna Vyn in the 800-meter run (2:19.74) and Ellie Maddox in the 1,600-meter run (5:11.24). The Charger girls dominated the Class AA relays with wins in the 400-meter relay (:49.58), 800-meter relay (1:44.86), 1,600-meter relay (4:07.79), 3,200-meter relay (9:36.65) and 1,600-meter sprint medley (4:25.37). 

Burke’s Paige Bull won the Class A discus (126-11) and Gregory’s Regan Graesser won the Class A long jump (16-06.5). 

The Sioux Falls Lincoln boys had a strong day in the sprints with Josh Myers finishing second in the 100-meter dash (:11.31). Teammates Griffin Fischer (:22.27) and Mikey Roche (:22.56) swept the top-two spots in the 200-meter dash. That speed carried the Patriots to wins in the 400-meter relay (:43.44), 800-meter relay (1:30.24), 1,600-meter relay (3:32.93) and 1600-meter sprint medley (3:47.85).

Yankton had a trio of winners with Austin Gobel winning the 100-meter dash (:11.31), Dylan Payer the 1,600-meter run (4:24.83) and Cale Haselhorst in the 110-meter hurdles (:15.87).

The Gregory boys had a pair of field event winners as Jhett Eklund won the Class A triple jump (40-06.5) and Daniel Mitchell the open high jump (6-04). 

Ethan Parkston’s James Deckert won the Class AA long jump (21-9.25) and was sixth in the 100-meter dash (:11.63). Ethan/Parkston also picked up a win in the Class A 3,200-meter relay as Gage Hohn, David Brock, Reco Muilenburg and Evan Bartlett clocked an (8:45.44).

Sioux Falls Christian had a strong day in Mitchell with junior Paul Hoekman winning the shot put (59-10.5) and discus (154-11). The Chargers 3,200-meter relay team of Bennett Wassenaar, Jackson Prins, Levi Vander Leest and Alex Oberloh ran an (8:16.44) to win easily. Wassenaar also won the 400-meter dash (:51.04).
