Class B SoDak 16 previews - Corsica-Stickney vs. Sanborn Central/Wonsocket rematch among intriguing matchups

The Class B girls basketball SoDak 16 contests are March 6, with the eight winners qualifying for the Class B state tournament on March 13-15 in Huron. 

Here’s a look at all eight of the SoDak 16 games, which are at neutral sites scattered throughout the state. 


No. 1 Centerville (22-0) vs. No. 16 Faulkton Area (15-7)

MADISON — The Tornadoes will put their 34-game winning streak on the line against upset-minded Faulkton Area at 7:15 p.m. CT., at Madison High School. 

Centerville is one of two undefeated Class B girls teams still playing, and has not lost since Feb. 3, 2024 against Class A Flandreau. The Tornadoes, who won last year’s Class B state title, have looked impressive during their championship encore. 

Centerville is outscoring its opponents by 21.5 points per game, and features a host of dynamic playmakers. Centerville is headlined by the senior trio of Althea Gust, Emma Marshall and Keira Austin, while Izzie Eide has looked impressive during her freshman campaign. 

The Trojans, who came out of Region 6B, have won six of their last seven games to earn a spot into the SoDak 16. Faulkton Area is powered by senior Carley Cotton, junior Presleigh Martinmaas and freshman Anika Mueller. 

Faulkton Area’s only state tournament qualification was in 2020, when it was canceled due to COVID-19. 


No. 2 Harding County (20-0) vs. No. 15 De Smet (15-7)

TIMBER LAKE — Harding County, one of two undefeated teams in Class B girls basketball, is gunning for back-to-back state tournament appearances. Standing in its way is No. 15 De Smet at 7 p.m., MT, in Timber Lake.

Harding County, which has not lost since last year’s sixth-place finish, scores 58.6 points per game and allows 30.4 points per game on defense. 

The Ranchers are led by seniors Bailey Verhulst and Kelsi Costello, along with junior Raelee Hunsucker, sophomore Macey Wendt, sophomore Brayden Padden, junior Kaylen Padden and freshman Kamry Padden. 

De Smet, which is representing Region 2B, has won seven of its last eight games entering the SoDak 16 matchup. The Bulldogs are led by junior Hazel Luethmers, senior Alyssa Asleson, junior Brooke Jennings and junior Megan Dylla. 

De Smet last qualified for the state tournament in 2022, when the Bulldogs finished as state runner-ups.

No. 3 Lyman (18-3) vs. No. 14 Lemmon (16-6)

PHILIP — Philip is the site for an all-West River SoDak 16 contest. 

Lyman will play Lemmon at 7 p.m., MT, with a trip to the Class B girls basketball tournament at stake. Lyman scores 55.9 points per game, while it allows 35.6 points per game on defense. 

Lyman’s three losses were against Class B foe Parkston, along with Class A powers Vermillion and Sioux Falls Christian. The Raiders are led by junior Mak Scott, freshman Jordyn Scott, senior Brooke Palmer, freshman Bree Smart and sophomore Kenzie Wagner. 

The Raiders are chasing their second straight Class B appearance, after finishing fourth last season.  

Lemmon, which features a host of underclassmen, is playing in its second straight SoDak 16 contest. The Cowgirls have not qualified for the state tournament since 2014.

Lemmon’s roster is made up of one junior, eight sophomores and one freshman. Lemmon advanced to the SoDak 16 after beating McLaughlin (41-34) in Region 8B play. The Cowgirls lost to the Mustangs (72-48) during the regular season. 


No. 4 Parkston (18-4) vs. No. 13 Highmore-Harrold (16-6)

MITCHELL — Parkston looks to punch its ticket to a state basketball tournament for the first time since 2012, while Highmore-Harrold heads south looking to stun one of Class B’s top teams.

The Trojans and Pirates face-off inside the World’s Only Corn Palace Thursday at 6 p.m. with a spot in the Class B state tournament on the line. Parkston enters the SoDak 16 averaging 56 points per game while surrendering just 35 points defensively. The Trojans four losses came against three Class A teams, Vermillion, Mt. Vernon-Plankinton and Wagner, while dropping just one game to Class B Ethan. Parkston is coming off two big playoff wins over Tripp-Delmont/Armour, 59-29 and Avon, 55-32. The Trojans are powered by seniors Mya Thuringer and Lauren Ziebart, along with sophomores Keeara Oakley, Berkeley Ziebart and Morgan Maxwell.

Highmore-Harrold looks to make its first state tournament appearance since 2011 when the Pirates earned its second consecutive third-place finish. The top seed out of Region 6B averages 48 points a game, giving up 42 points per contest. The Pirates earned a spot in the SoDak 16 defeating Potter County, 61-49, and Herreid-Selby Area, 47-35. Highmore-Harrold is a young group led by juniors Autumn Fallis and Addison McDonnell and freshmen Jada Baloun and Elle Stagg.


No. 5 Bennett County (20-2) vs. No. 12 Warner (16-6)

FORT PIERRE — Unfamiliar foes Bennett County and Warner will meet at 6:30 p.m., CT, with a Class B state tourney berth at stake. Bennett County, which is located in Martin near the Nebraska border, and Warner, which is in the northern part of South Dakota, have not played in recent history. They will play at Stanley County’s Parkview Gymnasium. 

Bennett County, which is looking for its first state tourney berth since 2007, scores 61.8 points per game and allows 33.2 points per game on defense. Bennett County’s two losses were against Class B power Lyman (51-49) and Class A power Dakota Valley (68-44). The Warriors, who are on an 11-game winning streak, are powered by sisters Reagan O’Neill (freshman) and Peyson O’Neill (eighth grader). 

Warner, which finished eighth at state in 2024, is on an eight-game winning streak. The Monarchs average 47.1 points per game and allow 42.2 points per game on defense. Warner is led by eighth-grader Kaydee Mackner, junior MaKenna Leidholt, senior Stacia Carda, freshman Tatum Hanson and freshman Courtney Leidholt. 



No. 6 Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (19-3) vs. No. 11 Corsica-Stickney (15-6)

MITCHELL — It’s a rematch for a spot in the State B basketball tournament.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket looks to avenge a loss to Corsica-Stickney earlier this year, a 44-43 loss in Corsica. This time, the Blackhawks and Jaguars will battle inside the Corn Palace Thursday at 7:45 p.m. with a trip to Huron on the line.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket averages 59 points per game, the fourth most in all of Class B girls basketball, while giving up just 36 per contest out of Region 3B. Sanborn Central-Woonsocket’s three losses have come against Lyman, Corsica-Stickney, and Parkston, including a one and two-point loss to CS and Parkston, respectively. The Blackhawks are led by senior Alexa Goertz, juniors Liz Boschee and Addy Baruth and sophomore Addison Bartholow.

The Jaguars look to return to the State B’s for the first time since 2022, the last of four consecutive trips to the state tournament. Corsica-Stickney has won six of its last seven games, including a 28-point win over Andes Central/Dakota Christian. The Jaguars are led by junior Sophie Delange and sophomore Braylee Bordewyk, who hit the game-winning three-pointer to beat this same Blackhawks team earlier this season.

No. 7 Kadoka Area (19-3) vs. No. 10 Deubrook Area (17-5)

CHAMBERLAIN — Deubrook Area will try to make program history Thursday.

The Dolphins will head to Chamberlain Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. one win from its first ever girls state tournament berth in history, while Kadoka Area vies to make it back to the state tournament for the first time since 2011.

The Kadoka Area Kougars come into its SoDak 16 matchup with just three losses to their name, dropping games to Lyman (54-49), Tri-Valley (42-33) and Bennett County (69-59). The Kougars average 53.9 points per game, allowing 32.6 points per contest as well. The Kougars clipped Jones County (45-42) and Wall (51-35) to earn its spot in the Sweet 16. Kadoka Area is powered by senior Bella Williams, a 1,000-point scorer. The Kougars are also led by senior Breezy Amiotte, junior Shaylee Porch and sophomore Charlee Richardson. 

Deubrook Area enters the SoDak 16 with the best record in Region 2B, picking up big wins over De Smet (46-33), Lakota Tech (67-41), Dell Rapids St. Mary (58-45) and Flandreau (56-35). The Dolphins average 56 points per game while allowing 38 points per contest, beating Oldham-Ramona/Rutland and Wessington Springs in region play. Deubrook Area is led by senior Zoey Molengraad, juniors Mataya Gouws and Matte Bauman, as well as sophomore Kylee Johnson.


No. 8 Dell Rapids St. Mary (16-6) vs. No. 9 Northwestern (17-5)

WATERTOWN — A state tournament drought will end on March 6. 

Dell Rapids St. Mary has not qualified for state since 2000, while Northwestern hasn’t been to state since 2005. The Cardinals or Wildcats will secure a state tournament berth at 5:30 p.m., CT at the Watertown High School. 

Dell Rapids St. Mary has found some postseason magic the past couple of games. The Cardinals lost to Class A No. 5 Hamlin (61-50) and Class B No. 1 Centerville (57-52) to finish the regular season. 

However, Dell Rapids St. Mary advanced to the SoDak 16 with wins over Chester (52-47) and Class B No. 4 Ethan (54-44) to earn the SoDak 16 berth. 

The Cardinals are led by senior Madala Hanson, senior Addison Libis, senior Brianna Griffin, junior Jenna Miller and freshman Maddyn LeBrun. 

The Wildcats enter the SoDak 16 contest on a five-game winning streak, including Region 1B victories over Waverly-South Shore (52-32) and Wilmot (49-31). Northwestern averages 47 points per game, while it allows 36.4 points per game on defense. 

Northwestern is led by Adriana Ratigan, a 6-foot-3 senior post, along with sophomore Sophia Troske, junior Ashley Haven, sophomore Breelyn Satter and sophomore Tara Blachford.
