Football Games to Watch - Elkton-Lake Benton hosts Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy in matchup of high-scoring offenses

Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy at Elkton-Lake Benton 

ELKTON — Two high-powered offenses will duke it out in Elkton.

Class 9AA No. 3 Elkton-Lake Benton (2-0) will host Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy (1-1) in a matchup featuring two high-scoring offenses. 

The Elks are coming off a 40-24 win over Viborg-Hurley, in which Colt Beck finished with 171 yards passing and one passing touchdown. Beck added 89 yards rushing and three more touchdowns. Tanner Stein rushed for 28 yards and two touchdowns. Stein hauled in four catches for 104 yards and one touchdown reception.

Elkton-Lake Benton, which blanked Waubay-Summit 42-0 in the season opener, is averaging 41 points per game through the first two weeks. 

The Phoenix dropped a 42-14 decision against Class 9AA No. 1 Parkston in the opener, but rebounded with a 50-19 win over Bon Homme on Aug. 30. Against the Cavaliers, FMFA posted more than 500 yards of total offense. Quarterback Riley Tschetter engineered the offensive attack, passing for 319 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 93 yards rushing and two more touchdowns. Christopher Aasen, Carter Weber, Jackson Donlan and Luke Peters added touchdowns for FMFA, which is receiving votes in the latest Class 9AA rankings. 


Wall at Kadoka Area 

KADOKA — Two Western Great Plains Conference foes will clash in Kadoka. 

Class 9B Kadoka Area (1-0) will host Class 9A No. 2 Wall (2-0) in a key West River matchup. 

Wall is coming off a 43-22 win over Harding County/Bison, in which Jace Blasius rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. Tanner Volmer passed for 156 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles finished with 439 total yards. 

Wall, which blanked Philip 37-0 in the season opener, is averaging 40 points per game through the first two weeks. 

Kadoka Area picked up a 62-14 win over Lyman on Aug. 30. Against the Raiders, Kole Hermann paced the offense with 157 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Gus Stout added 142 total yards and two touchdowns. Garrett Hermann scored two rushing touchdowns and Jerrett Hutchinson added a rushing score. 

Kadoka Area, which is honorable mention in the latest Class 9B poll, has not defeated Wall since 2012. 


Sioux Falls Christian at Rapid City Christian

RAPID CITY — Rapid City Christian’s Class 11A gauntlet continues.

The Comets made the move from Class 11B to Class 11A this season, and they’re facing some heavyweights to start 2024. Last week, Rapid City Christian (0-1) dropped a tight 20-16 decision against Class 11A No. 1 Canton. This week, the Comets will host Class 11A No. 2 Sioux Falls Christian (1-0) in another key Class 11A contest. 

Against the C-Hawks, Rapid City Christian quarterback Simon Kieffer passed for 279 yards and two touchdowns. Benson Kieffer hauled in six catches for 129 yards and a touchdown. Braylon Marshall added 89 yards rushing on 12 carries. 

Sioux Falls Christian began its 2024 season with a 42-13 win over West Central. It was Sioux Falls Christian’s first-ever football win against West Central. 

Against the Trojans, Sioux Falls Christian quarterback Lincoln Prins threw four touchdown passes.


Dakota Valley at Canton 

CANTON — Two Dak-XII Conference foes will renew their football rivalry.

Class 11A No. 1 Canton (1-0) will host Class 11A No. 3 Dakota Valley (1-0) in their first meeting on the football field since 2019. 

Canton is coming off a 20-16 win over Rapid City Christian in the opener. The C-Hawks needed a fourth-quarter score to clip the Comets.

Dakota Valley, meanwhile, knocked off two-time Class 11A state champion Dell Rapids, 22-14, in its season opener. Dakota Valley had 305 yards of offense, 160 passing yards and 145 rushing yards.


Lincoln at O’Gorman

SIOUX FALLS — The two Class 11AAA finalists from 2023 will square off this week.

Class 11AAA No. 2 Lincoln (1-0) will play at Class 11AAA No. 4 O’Gorman (0-1) in a rematch of last season’s state championship game. Lincoln, which won last season’s Class 11AAA state championship, is coming off a 55-7 win over Rapid City Stevens in its 2024 opener. 

Against Stevens, Lincoln racked up 446 total yards and rushed for 334 yards on the ground. 

In its season opener, O’Gorman dropped a 14-0 decision against Class 11AAA No. 1 Harrisburg.
