SIOUX FALLS — Parkston/Ethan/Tripp avenged a midseason loss to Bon Homme/Avon, 12-3, earning their first state tournament victory since 2008 on Friday.

Facing off against a Region 1B foe and rival Bon Homme/Avon to open the Class B state tournament, Parkston saw the rematch as a chance for redemption.

“We kind of knew what we were getting into,” said Parkston/Ethan/Tripp head Jeff Harris. “We knew they were going to take care of the ball and throw strikes. They were a solid team so we had to bring our best game today.”

Their best game involved a complete game outing from junior pitcher Carter Sommer.

“It almost influenced more to go and get it,” Sommer said of the previous loss to the Cavaliers. “Obviously, Bon Homme being a rivalry with us. Great team, great players, but it was time for us to come out on top and we did that.”

Sommer gave up just three runs on five hits and one walk in a seven-inning victory, even with not-so-friendly conditions with the pouring Sioux Falls rain.

“Yeah my offspeed was kind of messed up by the rain and everything,” Sommer said. “But I just kept on throwing, and kept on shoving.”

The three runs Sommer allowed all came in the home half of the third, shutting Bon Homme/Avon down the final five frames.

“I mean, I’ll admit I got agitated a little bit with myself, but I thought back to that region tournament and the same thing happened with Dakota Valley,” Sommer said. “I had endless faith in my teammates, and I knew we could come back as a team.”

And they did just that, after going down 3-1 through two innings, Parkston/Ethan/Tripp got aggressive on the base paths that led to 12 runs across the final four frames.

“We just preach being wild on the base paths, we’ll steal more bases than anybody,” Sommer said. “We take a lot of risks and that’s good with our team. Nobody is afraid to steal.”

In total, the Trojan offense tallied just five hits, but with the help of seven walks, two hit-by-pitches, and three Bon Homme/Avon errors, P/E/T racked up 12 stolen bases in the win.

Kolter Kramer led the team in hits going 2-for-4 with a triple and a two-RBI single in the sixth inning.

Kaden Holzbauer was also effective at the plate, batting 1-for-3 with a walk and another two-RBI single that gave Parkston a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning.

Taite Klumb drew three walks in the win, while Sommer and Brayden Jervik each collected hits in the win.

For Bon Homme, Landon Bares took the loss on the mound, giving up two hits, two walks, and five runs in four innings pitched.

Isaac Crownover, Landon Schmidt, and Jace Toupal each pitched in the loss as well.

Major Aarstad led the Cavaliers in hits with two, while Easton Mudder, Chapin Cooper, and Jackson Kaul each tallied hits in the loss.

Parkston/Ethan/Tripp advances to the State B semifinals at noon Saturday and will take on the winner of Dell Rapids against Rapid City Christian at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls.
