Penalty, goal line stand helps Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Tiospaye Topa nip Little Wound

KYLE — With just over a minute remaining in Friday’s game between Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Tiospaye Topa and Little Wound, the Mustangs scored on what appeared to be a game-winning touchdown. 

A motion penalty on the Mustangs moved the ball back and the Braves defense held on for a 28-24 win. The win improved Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Tiospaye Topa’s season record to 2-2 heading into a tough road contest at Winnebago, Nebraska, next week.

Game Summary: Little Wound scored first when quarterback Cashus Hunter got loose on a 63-yard touchdown run on a quarterback scramble. The Braves answered right back with a two-yard touchdown run from Danah Diver that tied the game at 6-6.


Little Wound answered with another touchdown run from Hunter, this time from eight yards as the Mustangs took back the lead, 12-6. Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Tiospaye Topa took the lead into halftime, 14-12, on a 34-yard touchdown run from Diver and a two-point conversion. 


The Braves appeared to take control of the game early in the third quarter on the strength of a Wiley Lawrence 1-yard touchdown run for a 20-12 lead. 

The Mustangs inched closer when Tatanka Catches Enemy scored on a 60-yard punt return then took a 24-20 lead when backup quarterback Javier Red Owl found Catches Enemy for an 18-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. 


Levi Elk Nation scored on a two-yard run and the two-point conversion accounted for the final score, 28-24.

Diver led CEB with 170 all-purpose yards while quarterback Tell Murray was 7-of-12 passing for 107 yards and a touchdown. Brock Ducheneaux led the defense with 16 tackles and as a team the Braves tallied 12 quarterback sacks. 


Todd County holds off Winnebago, remains undefeated

MISSION — Early in the second half of Sept. 21’s game between Todd County and Winnebago, the ball took a Falcon bounce. 

The Indians scored on their opening drive of the third period to take a 20-12 lead then stopped Todd County near midfield on the Falcons first possession of the half. A Falcon punt was bobbled by Winnebago and recovered by freshman Oniya Whirlwind Soldier.

Two plays later the Falcons scored, converted the two-point conversion and took their first lead of the game over Winnebago. The Falcons would hold on for the 30-26 win, improving to 4-0 on the season, tops in the Class A Division of the All-Nations Football Conference.

Game Summary: Winnebago took an early lead when Elijah White Bear hit Santonio Nieman for a two-yard touchdown reception and a 6-0 lead. The Falcons tied it on a two-yard run from Ty Valandra. 

Winnebago took the lead back in the second quarter when Antrell Harlan scored on a 1-yard run. Todd County tied the game, 14-14, when Ty Valandra scored on a 39-yard run. 


Winnebago took the lead back in the third quarter, 20-14, when Cashus Kearns scored on a 53-yard touchdown run. 

Todd County took control of the game in the second half with short touchdown runs from Drake Espinoza and Chris Ellert. Todd County converted each of their two-point conversions and took a 30-20 lead at the midpoint of the final quarter.

Winnebago’s final score came on a 93-yard punt return from Kearns for the 30-26 final score. 


For Todd County Ty Valandra rushed for 189 yards and two touchdowns while Drake Espinoza ran for 146 yards. 

Winnebago’s Antrell Harlan rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown.
