HURON — Sanborn Central/Woonsocket got the upper hand on Lyman at the Huron Arena this time around.

In a rematch of the Huron Holiday Classic, a 57-46 Lyman victory, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket earned a 53-40 overtime win at the Class B girls basketball tournament on Thursday.

“I think our defense was so much better,” SCW junior Liz Boschee said about the rematch. “We ran the ball a lot better and I think we’ve just got a lot more chemistry going on through the season and I think that helped a lot.”

The Blackhawks will now play Dell Rapids St. Mary in the championship semifinals on Friday. On Thursday, SCW outscored Lyman 15-2 in the overtime period to advance to the semifinals.

Lyman’s Mak Scott forced overtime with a 3-point basket, evening the score at 38-38 with 20 seconds left. After failing to win the game in regulation, SCW coach Rob Baruth didn’t sense any panic from the Blackhawks.

“They settled in right away,” Baruth said. “We got a stop and a bucket right away and that really settled everything down and we got going.”

Boschee ignited the overtime push, and finished with a game-high 23 points. Boschee and Alexa Goertz forced key steals down the stretch, scoring crucial baskets in the low-scoring affair.

And it came after Baruth challenged Boschee and Goertz, who finished with 13 points and six steals.

“Both of them made two big plays out front and it really kind of got some things going,” Baruth said.

Boschee and Goertz combined for eight of SCW’s 10 steals.

“Those steals picked up the energy a lot more,” said Boschee, who also grabbed 11 rebounds.

SCW was clinging to a 42-40 lead with 2:24 left, but held the Raiders scoreless from there and stretched its lead into double digits for the win.

Mak Scott and Jordyn Scott scored 13 and 10 points, respectively. Brooke Palmer added nine points for Lyman, which plays Harding County in the consolation semifinals on Friday.

Baruth anticipated the teams would lock into a defensive slugfest, and they did. The Blackhawks led 12-7 after the first quarter, and 20-16 at halftime. In the first half, the teams combined to shoot 3-of-14 from the 3-point line.

“When you look at the matchups all the way around with everybody I just didn’t think it would be a 75-70 game,” Baruth said. “This was going to be a dogfight all the way.”

Points continued to be a premium in the second half, and neither team pulled away by more than four points. The Blackhawks led 38-34 with 1:10 left, and Lyman got within three before Mak Scott sent the game into overtime on her 3-pointer.

But SCW held Lyman to just two points in overtime.

In the championship semifinals, Region 3B teams Sanborn Central/Woonsocket and Dell Rapids St. Mary will play for a spot in the state championship.

The teams have not met this season, but Baruth appreciates the brand of basketball the Cardinals play.

“They are a fun team to watch,” Baruth said. “They can really shoot the ball well and they are quick. So we are going to have to look at some film tonight and see what we can get figured out there.”
