Top Performers of the Week - Erik Salmen, Brendan Nowell power Hitchcock-Tulare past Iroquois/Lake Preston

The 2023 South Dakota high school football season resumed last week and top performances continued to roll in. 

Here are this week’s top performers across South Dakota for football games on Thursday, Aug. 31-Sept. 2. 

  • Brendan Nowell had a hand in seven total touchdowns in Hitchcock-Tulare’s 62-8 victory over Iroquois/Lake Preston. Nowell completed 7 of 12 passes for 168 yards and threw five passing touchdowns. Nowell added 118 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown and 57-yard kickoff return for a score. Nowell also logged an interception and three tackles on defense. 
  • Hitchcock-Tulare’s Erik Salmen added four catches for 115 yards and three receiving touchdowns. He logged 64 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Defensively, he added six tackles and two sacks.
  • Deubrook Area’s Gavin Landmark rushed for 249 yards and four touchdowns in a 57-6 win over Great Plains Lutheran on Sept. 1.
  • Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy’s Riley Tschetter accounted for six total touchdowns — five through the air — in a 52-18 victory over Avon.

  • Brandon Valley’s Jack Thue completed 18 of 35 passes for 302 yards and two touchdown passes against Harrisburg. Thue added 13 carries for 105 yards and one rushing touchdown. 
  • Brandon Valley’s Dveyoun Bonwell-Witte hauled in six catches for 159 yards.
  • Stanley County’s Broch Zeeb completed 5 of 10 passes for 115 yards and threw two passing touchdowns in a 40-0 win vs. Dupree. He added a rushing touchdown. 
  • Stanley County’s Barrett Schweitzer added 129 rushing yards and two touchdowns as Stanley County improved to 3-0. 
  • Pierre’s Cade Kaiser completed 9 of 12 passes for 141 yards and threw three passing touchdowns in a 49-0 victory over Brookings. He added six carries for the Governors (2-0).

  • Harrisburg’s Sam Knuth completed 21 of 30 passes for a school-record 436 yards and three passing touchdowns, while rushing for 56 yards and two touchdowns in a 33-28 win vs. Brandon Valley on Sept. 2. 
  • Harrisburg’s Max Carlson hauled in 12 catches for 189 yards and one touchdown catch against the Lynx. 
  • Winner’s Aiden Barfuss rushed for 187 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns against Webster Area on Sept. 1. 
  • Winner’s Karson Keiser added 138 rushing yards on eight carries and scored three touchdowns against the Bearcats. 

  • Warner’s Hunter Cramer rushed for 102 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns. He completed 11 of 16 passes for 205 yards and threw a touchdown pass. 
  • Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Hayden Groos completed 14 of 18 passes for 286 yards and five touchdown passes in a 77-20 win over Sioux Falls Roosevelt. 
  • Wall’s Burk Blasius completed 6 of 7 passes for 148 yards and threw two touchdown passes. He added a rushing touchdown and returned a fumble for a score. 
  • Hot Springs’ Colin Iverson recorded four total touchdowns in a 61-6 win over Lakota Tech. Iverson threw two touchdowns, rushed for another score and had a pick-six against the Tatanka. He had five tackles on defense.

  • Harding County/Bison’s Hayden Pihl tossed three passing touchdowns in a 40-0 win over Faith on Sept. 1. Pihl completed 9 of 13 passes for 220 yards.
  • Trey Maaland had a hand in all five Deuel touchdowns in a 35-0 win vs. Sisseton on Sept. 1. Maaland scored three rushing touchdowns, had an interception return for a score and tossed a 74-yard touchdown pass. 
  • Parkston’s Kolter Kramer racked up 131 rushing yards on five carries and scored four rushing touchdowns against Wolsey-Wessington. He added an 80-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. 
  • Canistota’s Tage Ortman had a hand in four touchdowns in a 44-21 victory over Viborg-Hurley. Ortman logged two rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns for the Hawks (3-0). He added an interception on defense. 

  • Milbank’s Garrett Mertens completed 11 of 21 passes for 157 yards and three passing touchdowns against Madison on Sept. 1. 
  • Madison’s Ben Brooks completed 19 of 28 passes for 309 yards and three touchdown passes against Milbank. 
  • Herreid/Selby Area’s Houston Hauge rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns against Lemmon/McIntosh on Sept. 1. 
  • Sully Buttes’ Gavin Barber rushed for 300 yards and five touchdowns on 14 carries. He hauled in 58 receiving yards and had a touchdown pass. On defense, he had an interception and a fumble recovery. 
  • Corsica-Stickney’s Carter Wright scored three total touchdowns — two rushing and on a punt return — in a 52-0 win over Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Sept. 1. 
  • Howard’s Taiden Hoyer accounted for three total touchdowns in a 28-0 victory over Kimball/White Lake. Hoyer tossed two passing touchdowns and ran for another in the victory.

  • Sioux Valley’s Boden Schiller logged 148 rushing yards on 18 carries and scored two rushing touchdowns against Elk Point-Jefferson. He added 13 tackles on defense. 
  • Pine Ridge’s Marvin Richard III completed 19 of 30 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 117 yards and two more scores. 
  • Pine Ridge’s Dominic Ghost Bear added seven receptions for 150 yards and two receiving touchdowns. 
  • Aberdeen Roncalli’s Zane Backous passed for 216 yards and three passing touchdowns, while rushing for another score. He added three sacks on defense. 
  • Aberdeen Roncalli’s Aiden Fisher finished with 137 receiving yards and hauled in three touchdown receptions. 
  • Faulkton Area’s Garrett Cramer rushed for 173 yards on nine carries and scored three touchdowns on Sept. 1 vs. Potter County. 
  • Groton Area’s Lane Tietz completed 6 of 8 passes for 149 yards and tossed three passing touchdowns in a 50-0 win over Dakota Hills on Sept. 1. 
  • Platte-Geddes Parker Bailey logged three total touchdowns in a 42-14 victory over Gregory on Sept. 1. Bailey scored two rushing touchdowns and hauled in an 89-yard touchdown pass. 

  • Watertown’s Juven Hudson posted 236 rushing yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns in a 32-13 win vs. Huron. 
  • Hamlin’s Tyson Stevenson completed 5 of 7 passes for 167 yards and three passing touchdowns, while he added a rushing score.
  • Leola-Frederick Area’s Gavin Nickelson scored four total touchdowns to pace the Titans to a 52-0 win vs. Northwestern on Sept. 1. Nickelson scored three rushing touchdowns and added a touchdown reception. 
  • De Smet’s Kadyn Fast posted four total touchdowns in a 32-14 victory over Dell Rapids St. Mary on Sept. 1. Fast rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns, while he hauled in a touchdown reception. Fast added a punt return for a score and posted six tackles on defense. 
  • McCook Central/Montrose’s Lane Deutsch completed 16 of 24 passes for 277 yards and two passing touchdowns. He added three tackles and a pick-six on defense. 
  • Yankton’s Lucas Kampshoff accounted for four touchdowns in a 42-27 victory over Spearfish on Sept. 1. 
  • Rapid City Stevens’ Carter Johnson rushed for three touchdowns in a 57-0 victory over Douglas on Sept. 2 at the Rushmore Bowl. 
  • Jacob Johnston added two passing touchdowns and a rushing score for Stevens.
