SIOUX FALLS — Wall’s Rylan McDonnell pulled off the long and triple jump sweep on Friday.

One day after winning the triple jump, the Wall High School senior claimed the Class B long jump state championship. He finished with a mark of 22-feet and 8.25 inches to earn the long jump title.

On Thursday, he won the triple jump with a mark of 41-9.75 to start the memorable weekend in his final state track and field meet.

“It’s nice to know all that hard work I put in paid off,” McDonnell said. “I waited a long time for it and it’s finally there. I got it done.”

Ipswich’s Trevor Heinz finished second in the long jump (21-11.75). McDonnell secured the state championship prior to his final jump.

So with the state title in hand, McDonnell hyped up the crowd for his final jump and he soared to 22-8.25.

“The first place is one thing,” McDonnell said. “I realized that was out so I was just throwing it all out there, going for everything I had. … That was truly a picture perfect moment. That was amazing.”

What state title means more to McDonnell?

“Triple jump, I was really excited about that,” McDonnell said. “That was awesome. But I think this is a little bit bigger. This means a little bit more to me. I had tougher competition on this side of it.”

McDonnell will compete collegiately for the South Dakota State University track and field team.
