COLTON — Some great matches highlighted the weekend with the matchup between Sioux Falls Jefferson’s Aiden Wells (144) meeting Miller/Highmore-Harrold’s Kellan Hurd in the finals of Saturday’s Tri-Valley Invitational. 

Wells, 35-1, ended up defeating Hurd, 24-2 (UTB 2-1).


Weekend of Jan. 17-18 Big Matches: 

  • 106 - Apollo Willuweit (Winner) 20-0, 8th. over Ryvr Larson (Bon Homme/Avon) 22-1, So. (Dec 3-2) in the finals of the Tri-Valley Invitational. With the win Willuweit moved to the No. 1 ranking at 106. 

  • 175 - Landyn Reiser (Tri-Valley) 22-1, Jr. over Colby Kolda (Miller/Highmore-Harrold) 16-2, Sr. (Dec 4-3) in the finals of the Tri-Valley Invitational. Reiser is ranked No. 2 at 175 while Kolda is No. 3. 

  • G145 - Sarah Rickenbach (Hot Springs) 8-1, So. over Kimberlyn Heisler (Spearfish) 17-8, Jr. (Fall 3:02). Rickenbach has been battling injuries this season so it was nice to see her on the mat and winning the Black Hills Conference Tournament.

  • G185 - Jessica Hite (Custer) 22-1, So. over Marlee Heltzel (Spearfish) 15-5, Fr. (Fall 0:59). Hite is ranked No. 2 in the girls rankings while Heitzel is ranked No. 3. 

  • 106 - Owen Serck (Beresford/Alcester-Hudson) 17-5, Jr. over Gable Uhrig (Pierre) 21-5, Fr. (MD 15-6). Serck started the season at 113 but dropped to 106 and is starting to make some noise as evidenced by a 15-6 decision over Pierre’s Gable Uhrig in the finals of the Jerry Opbroek tournament. Serck is ranked No. 3 in Class A while Uhrig is ranked No. 4. 

  • 132 - Parker Graveman (Sturgis) 27-5, Jr. over Alex Oedekoven (Pierre) 22-4, Jr. (Dec 8-6). Big win for Graveman who vaults up in the Class A 132 rankings this week with Oedekoven dropping to No. 3. 


Aberdeen Central wins Harrisburg dual tournament

Aberdeen Central improved to 9-0 on the season after winning Saturday’s Harrisburg dual tournament. Aberdeen Central defeated Harrisburg 33-28, Dell Rapids 78-6, Sioux Falls Washington 59-17, Sioux Falls Roosevelt 82-0 and O’Gorman 57-24.

The Golden Eagles had their stiffest test of the day in their opening round win over Harrisburg. Aberdeen Central is currently ranked as the No. 2 Class A dual team by Dakota Grappler, trailing only Sturgis.

Aidan Callahan hands Watertown’s Gage Lohr a loss (technically)

It has been a minute since Watertown’s Gage Lohr has felt the pangs of defeat. As an eighth-grader in 2023, Lohr won a state title (106) with a 5-2 decision over Brandon Valley’s Brendon Oehme and finished with a 44-0 record. A year ago Lohr won a second state title and finished with a 44-0 record. Lohr entered the 138 finals at Saturday’s Jerry Opbroek Invitational with a 26-0 record for this season. 

In the finals Rapid City Stevens wrestler Aidan Callahan was awarded the win after Lohr had to withdraw due to an injury at the 3:06 mark of the second period. 


O’Gormans’ Keenan Sheridan reaches 200-win plateau

Sioux Falls O’Gorman senior Keenan Sheridan reached two major milestones at the Harrisburg dual tournament. Over the weekend Sheridan won the 200th match of his career while also earning the 100th pin of his career. 


Clark/Willow Lake young guns: Cade Gaikowski, Benny Pommer, Kaden Wookey and Cooper Pommer

Fans at the Potter County tournament in Gettysburg saw a whole lot of Clark/Willow Lake in the finals of the tournament, especially in the lower weight classes. 

Cade Gaikowski defeated teammate Benny Pommer in the 106 finals, Kaden Wookey won the 113 title and Cooper Pommer won the 120 title. 

Gaikowski is just a freshman while Benny Pommer is an eighth grader. Wookey is a freshman and Cooper Pommer is only a junior.
