SIOUX FALLS — It was business as usual for Burke’s Paige Bull on Thursday.

The senior thrower captured her third straight Class B discus championship at the South Dakota state track and field meet at Howard Wood Stadium. The now three-time champ capped off another state title with a toss of 141-feet and 11-inches.

“It’s really special,” Bull said. “Not a lot of people can say they are three-time champs, especially in one event. So it’s amazing. I never really thought about it until it started actually happening. So it’s amazing and unbelievable.”

Bull said it was special going out with a state championship her senior season, but was still shooting for the Class B meet record of 145-6.

“I wanted to hit 145-6 at least to get the meet record,” Bull said. “But you can’t always control it and I haven't gone there this year yet, and I know I usually throw farther with a good wind and there was no wind today. So you can't really control everything.”

Bull edged Iroquois/Lake Preston’s Hadlee Holt, who finished second with a mark of 140-1. The pair separated themselves from the pack, with Timber Lake’s Jasmine Nash the next closest at 122 feet for third place.

On their third throws, Holt put the pressure on with a toss of 134-9. Bull answered the challenge and uncorked a throw of 140-10.

Bull said Holt’s heave motivated her to crack the 140-foot barrier.

“That 134 that Hadlee threw that got her in first that one time, I think that is what pushed me to get 140,” Bull said. “So I owe that to her and all the other competitors. We always push each other and I wouldn't have the motivation if they didn't."

In the finals, Bull fouled on her first two attempts. Holt, meanwhile, fouled on her first attempt and threw 126-7 on her second attempt.

Holt hit 140-1 on her final attempt, and with the state championship already in hand, Bull logged a toss of 141-11 on her final career discus throw.

“I couldn’t have been happier for how this season turned out, and how my team came out and supported me and we all supported each other and all the other throwers,” Bull said.
