The South Dakota state track and field meet is May 29-31 at Howard Wood Stadium.

The three-day event features top-tier athletes from across the state, competing for individual and team success.

Here’s a look at some of the top Class A athletes to watch:

  • Sioux Falls Christian’s Paul Hoekman is one of the top shot putters in the country. The senior enters state with a career-best toss of 67-feet and 1.75 inches, which ranks top-10 nationally and fifth all-time in South Dakota history. A future North Dakota State University thrower, Hoekman also has the top Class A discus throw (180-6). Hoekman won last season’s Class A shot put championship.
  • Custer speedster Jordyn Larsen sits atop two sprint races in Class A. The future University of South Dakota runner has top times in the 100-meter dash (:11.88) and 200-meter dash (:24.25). Larsen also runs on Custer's top-seeded 400-meter relay (:49.98) and 800-meter relay (1:44.21).
  • Deuel’s Oliver Fieber headlines the top Class A boys sprinters. The junior has the top sprint times in the 100-meter dash (:10.48) and 200-meter dash (:21.93). Hamlin’s Zac VanMeeteren, a future South Dakota State University football player, will challenge Fieber and ranks second in the 100-meter dash (:10.93) and 200-meter dash (:22.32).
  • Lennox’s Bergan Musser is one of the next stars in South Dakota track and field. The eighth-grader is ranked No. 1 in the 400-meter dash (:56.96) and long jump (18-5), while she ranks second in the 100-meter dash (:11.92) and 200-meter dash (:25.04).
  • Hill City’s Tate Grabow will look to score major points for the Rangers in the distance races. The junior has top times in the 800-meter run (1:56.16), 1,600-meter run (4:24.47) and ranks second in the 3,200-meter run (9:41.23).

  • Madison’s Shane Veenhof headlines a host of top Class A hurdlers. The junior has the top times in the 110-meter hurdles (:14.41) and 300-meter hurdles (:38.06). Deuel’s Gabe Sather (110-meter hurdles), West Central’s Liam Schmeichel (110-meter hurdles), Rapid City Christian’s Ezra Wildeman (300-meter hurdles) and Miller’s Isaak Hunter (110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles) are among the other top hurdlers in the class.

  • Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal looks to add another long jump championship to her resume this weekend. Koupal, a junior with a host of major college basketball scholarship offers, has won four straight Class A state high jump championships. She enters with the top high jump mark at 5-6, while she’s also qualified in the shot put.
  • Custer’s Kincade Lehman will put a bow on a stellar track and field career this weekend. The senior has the top marks in the long jump (23-8.5) and triple jump (48-7.25). He also ranks 10th in the 100-meter dash (:11.19). Lehman won last season’s Class A triple jump state championship.
  • Custer sisters Ciana, Kelsey and Tenlee have separated themselves from the pole vault pack. Ciana, a senior, and Tenlee, an eighth-grader, enter tied atop the standings at 12-6 each. Kelsey, a sophomore, has the third-best mark at 12-5. Ciana, who will compete at the University of South Dakota, has won the past two Class A state championships.
  • Scotland/Menno’s Trinity Bietz will look for a three-peat, and her first Class A state championship. Bietz has won the last two Class B state championships in the shot put, but will compete in Class A this season after the Scotland and Menno co-op formed in track and field. Bietz has the top seed mark in the shot put (40-5), while she also ranks fourth in the discus (129-0) and fifth in the javelin (119-5).
