Caden Hinker, Emilee Fox, Bella Swedlund highlight week filled with basketball milestones

There were no shortage of milestones in South Dakota high school basketball last week. 

Mitchell’s Caden Hinker, Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Emilee Fox, Winner’s Bella Swedlund, Tea Area's Cael Lundin, Tri-Valley’s Paige Jewett and Lakota Tech’s Shayla Bravo all achieved career milestones to highlight the week’s action between Jan. 24-29. Here’s a look at what the five players accomplished last week. 

  • On Jan. 29, Hinker scored 33 points against Sioux Falls Lincoln and moved into the top-10 on the Class AA all-time boys basketball scoring list. Hinker now has 1,382 career points, moving into a tie for No. 10 with Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s John Sivesind. Hinker, who will play at Augustana University, needs two points to move past Huron’s Jay Ellwein for ninth on the Class AA all-time scoring list. The top-10 Class AA scoring list:

  • On Jan. 28, Fox scored a game-high 23 points and became Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s all-time leading scorer in girls basketball history. The sophomore guard broke the previous record set by Megan Bultsma, who finished with 1,286 career points. Fox now sits at 1,288 career points. Katlyn Briggs (1,192) is the other girls basketball player to surpass 1,000 career points at MVP, which started its co-op in 2013. Fox has verbally committed to South Dakota State University.

  • On Jan. 29, Swedlund scored 20 points against Florence-Henry and became the 31st player in South Dakota girls basketball history to reach 2,000 career points. The future Kansas Jayhawk currently has 2,018 career points and needs seven points to surpass White Lake’s Kathy Falk for 27th on the all-time girls basketball scoring list.

  • On Jan. 29, Lundin erupted for 41 points in a 79-51 win over Clark/Willow Lake. The future Northwestern College men's basketball player also surpassed the 1,000-career point plateau in the win. He's the third Tea Area boys basketball player to surpass 40 points in a game, joining Ethan Friedel and Noah Friedel. 

  • On Jan. 28, Bravo scored her 1,000th career point in Lakota Tech’s 71-41 win over Hot Springs. She’s the first player in Lakota Tech history to reach the milestone. 

  • On Jan. 29, Jewett scored 28 points in a 63-55 win over Colman-Egan to surpass 1,000 career points for Tri-Valley.
