A week ago Pierre had a 50-point lead on No. 2 Canton in the girls wrestling poll. After an impressive performance at Saturday’s Harrisburg Invitational the C-Hawks have cut the projected margin of victory for Pierre to 38 points.

Still a decisive lead for the defending champion Governors who are projected to score 165 points at the state meet, ahead of Canton (127) and Spearfish (74). Brookings (69) and Rapid City Stevens (61) round out the top five in the final wrestling poll of the season.

Brookings girls on the move: A week ago the Brookings girls were ranked 11th. This week, with a number of wrestlers making their first appearance in the rankings, the Bobcats are all the way up to a No. 4 ranking.

The 106-pound bracket is going to be a barn burner at the state meet. Defending state champion, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes athlete Akana Metcalfe has several losses this season and at one point dropped all the way to No. 3 in the rankings. Well, Metcalfe won at Harrisburg on Saturday to jump back to the top ranked grappler in her weight class. Brandon Valley’s Mary-Kathernine Joseph and Spearfish’s Maraia Kruske each have held the No. 1 ranking this season and are No. 2 and No. 3 respectively this week.

Yankton’s 142-pounder Naveah Leonard jumps back to No. 1 ranking this week after winning the Harrisburg tournament on Saturday.
