Class 9A Semifinal Preview - Howard hosts Warner, Wall welcomes Wolsey-Wessington in loaded semifinal round

Four teams with recent championship appearances and a combined 39-1 record makeup this year’s Class 9A semifinal field. 

No. 1 Wall (10-0) hosts No. 4 Wolsey-Wessington (9-1) and No. 2 Howard (10-0) hosts No. 3 Warner (10-0) in a loaded semifinal round. 

The Eagles, who most recently won the 2022 Class 9A state championship, have coasted to an undefeated record. Wall defeated Chester (52-0) and Castlewood (62-12) in its first two playoff games. The Eagles are scoring 52.1 points per game and are allowing 6.8 points per game on defense. 

Wolsey-Wessington, which won the 2020 Class 9B state championship, have just one blemish this season, a 30-22 setback against Class 9AA No. 1 Parkston. The Warbirds are on a three-game winning streak, including wins over Lemmon-McIntosh (50-20) and Dupree (56-28) in the playoffs. The Warbirds average 39.4 points per game and allow 17.4 points per game on defense. 

Howard, which finished as the 2023 Class 9AA runner-ups, has again rolled to an undefeated season. The Tigers defeated Timber Lake (60-6) and Ipswich (54-0) in their first two playoff games. Howard scores 47.1 points per game and allows five points per game on defense, while pitching four shutout victories. 

Warner, which won last season’s Class 9A state championship, is riding a 22-game winning streak. The Monarchs defeated Gayville-Volin (49-6) and Philip (37-8) in their first two playoff wins. Warner scores 40.4 points per game and allows 6.4 points per game on defense.
