A year ago Mount Vernon Plankinton eighth grader Makenzie Hetland cleared 5-00 to tie for sixth place in the Class A girls high jump. 

Fast forward to her freshman season and Hetland is now one of the top high jumpers in South Dakota, regardless of class with a clearance of (5-05). 

The Class A high jump looks like it could be one of the premier field events at this year’s state track meet. Joining Hetland on the top line of the Class girls high jump is defending champion Ashlyn Koupal of Wagner and 2023 third place finisher Audrey Nelson of Madison. All three athletes have cleared (5-05) this spring.
