The Class A boys basketball SoDak 16 contests are March 11, with the eight winners qualifying for the Class A state tournament on March 20-22 in Sioux Falls. 

Here’s a look at all eight of the SoDak 16 games, which are at neutral sites scattered throughout the state. 


No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian (20-1) vs. No. 16 McCook Central/Montrose (12-10)

HARRISBURG — No. 1 Harrisburg is one game away from another Class A boys basketball tourney berth. 

The Chargers will play No. 16 seed McCook Central/Montrose at 7 p.m., CT, in a SoDak 16 contest. Sioux Falls Christian, which finished second last season, is gunning for its 10th straight state tourney appearance. 

The Chargers have not lost against a South Dakota team this season, with their only loss against Iowa’s Western Christian. Sioux Falls Christian owns seven wins over teams still alive in the postseason: Lennox, O’Gorman, West Central, Hamlin, Dell Rapids, Rapid City Christian and Clark/Willow Lake. SFC earned wins over Tri-Valley and Dakota Valley in 4A action to secure a spot in the SoDak 16. 

The Chargers are powered by future Jackrabbit Griffin Goodbary, a 6-foot-11 forward. Cooper Goodbary, Cole Snyder and Brant Wassenaar are also key contributors to the Chargers. 

MCM is looking for its first state tourney berth since 2010. The Fighting Cougars picked up victories over Parker and Wagner to earn a trip to the SoDak 16. 

The Fighting Cougars are also led by Mason Sabers, Ben Wiebersick, Jackson Schmidt, Lane Deutsch and Zane McCormick. 


No. 2 Hamlin (19-2) vs. No. 15 Milbank (12-10)

WATERTOWN — Two Northeast Conference foes will play for a trip to the state tourney at 7:15 p.m., CT, at the Watertown Civic Arena. 

Hamlin defeated Milbank, 66-32, on Feb. 4 in the regular-season meeting. 

The Chargers, who won last season’s Class A state championship, are trying to secure their third straight state tourney appearance. Hamlin’s two losses were against Houston, Tennessee (74-71) and Sioux Falls Christian (75-60) in a rematch of last season’s state championship game. 

Hamlin earned seven wins over teams still alive in the postseason: Groton Area, Dell Rapids, Castlewood, Rapid City Christian, West Central, Milbank and Clark/Willow Lake. Hamlin defeated Sioux Valley in Region 2A action to earn a trip to the SoDak 16. 

The Chargers are powered by Easton Neuendorf, Jackson Wadsworth, Zac VanMeeteren, Evan Stormo, Dawson Noem and Boden Stevenson. 

Milbank is looking for its first trip to the state tourney since 2005, when it won the state championship. The Bulldogs defeated Webster Area and Aberdeen Roncalli in Region 1A action to advance to the SoDak 16. 

The Bulldogs are powered by Sam Rick, Emmett Hanson and Ryan Keeton. 


No. 3 Rapid City Christian (19-2) vs. No. 14 Dell Rapids (13-9)

MURDO — Rapid City Christian is looking to make back-to-back state tournament appearances at 7 p.m., CT at Jones County High School. The Comets finished fourth at last season’s state tournament. 

Rapid City Christian’s two losses were against the top-two teams in Class A: Sioux Falls Christian and Hamlin. The Comets defeated SoDak 16 qualifiers Hill City, Viborg-Hurley and Class AA qualifier Spearfish. The Comets defeated Custer to secure a spot in the SoDak 16. 

Rapid City Christian is paced by Benson Kieffer, Simon Kieffer, Wes Schlabach, Julius Frog and Aiden Roberts. 

Dell Rapids is looking for its first state tourney trip since 2021, when it finished up a three-year run of three consecutive appearances at state. Dell Rapids defeated Tri-Valley and Baltic in Region 3A action to secure a trip to state. 

The Quarriers played a gauntlet of a schedule, including against their fellow Dak-XII teams. Dell Rapids defeated SoDak 16 qualifiers Mobridge-Pollock and Freeman during the regular season. 

The Quarriers are led by 6-foot-11 Jack Kloth and 6-foot-6 Tad Tjaden, along with Karson Paye and Lincoln Anderson. 


No. 4 West Central (18-3) vs. No. 13 Hanson (14-7)

MADISON — West Central is inching closer to its first state tournament berth since 2001, when the Trojans won the Class A state championship. Standing in West Central’s way is Hanson at 7:15 p.m., CT, in Madison. 

West Central’s three losses have come against SoDak 16 qualifiers Sioux Falls Christian, Castlewood and Hamlin. The Trojans defeated SoDak 16 qualifiers Dell Rapids, Groton Area, Hill City, St. Francis Indian and Lennox during the regular season. West Central defeated Madison in Region 3A action to advance to the SoDak 16. 

West Central is led by Connor Mebius, Kolte Garry, Carter Tetzlaff, Luke Knight, Boche Knight and Will Kuhl, a 6-foot-9 junior forward. 

Hanson is looking for its first state tourney berth since 2015, when it won the Class B state championship. The Beavers lost to SoDak 16 qualifiers Howard, Viborg-Hurley, Freeman and Wessington Springs during the regular season. 

The Beavers defeated Mount Vernon/Plankinton in Region 5A action to secure a spot in the SoDak 16. 

Hanson is led by AJ Wilber, Ben Wilber, Ty Hernandez, Carter Popp and Sutton Dewald. 


No. 5 Lennox (18-4) vs. No. 12 Mobridge-Pollock (14-8)

HURON — Lennox, one of the hottest teams in Class A, will face Mobridge-Pollock at 5:30 p.m., CT, at the Huron Arena.

The Orioles, who are on an 11-game winning streak, are looking for their first state tourney appearance since 2019. Lennox has not lost since Jan. 25, a 58-55 setback against SoDak 16 qualifier Clark/Willow Lake. Lennox’s other three losses were against SoDak 16 qualifiers Sioux Falls Christian and West Central, along with a loss against Iowa’s Western Christian. Lennox defeated SoDak 16 qualifiers Milbank, Groton Area and Dell Rapids during the regular season. 

The Orioles defeated Canton and Vermillion in Region 4A action to earn a SoDak 16 berth. 

Lennox is led by Tate Gerdes, Boston Katzer, Layton Smith, Aiden Hanssen and Teegen Musser. 

Mobridge-Pollock, which is looking for its first state tourney trip since 2013, defeated Chamberlain and Stanley County in Region 6A action to secure a trip to the SoDak 16. The Tigers defeated SoDak 16 qualifiers Timber Lake, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte and Sully Buttes during the regular season. They lost to SoDak 16 qualifiers Dell Rapids, Aberdeen Christian, Groton Area and Winner.

The Tigers are paced by Shooter Frederick, Shane Henderson, Jackson Eisemann, Kale Knudson and Easton Eisemann.   


No. 6 Clark/Willow Lake (17-4) vs. No. 11 St. Francis (16-6)

MILLER — Clark/Willow Lake is one win away from its first state tourney berth since 2019, when it won the Class B state championship. Standing in CWL’s way is St. Francis at 6 p.m., CT, at the Miller Armory. 

Clark/Willow Lake’s four losses have come against SoDak 16 qualifiers Groton Area, Castlewood, Sioux Falls Christian and Hamlin. CWL defeated SoDak 16 qualifiers Howard, Milbank and Lennox during the regular season. The Cyclones defeated Deuel in Region 2A action to secure a SoDak 16 appearance. 

CWL is led by Sullivan Felberg, Emmerson Larson, Chris Bevers, Bo Begeman and Griffin Musser. 

The Warriors are looking for their first state tourney appearance since 2005, their only trip in school history. Two of St. Francis Indian’s six losses were against SoDak 16 qualifiers Winner and West Central. The Warriors defeated SoDak 16 qualifiers Wall, Crazy Horse and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte in the regular season. 

In Region 7A action, St. Francis outlasted Todd County (84-80, OT) and Pine Ridge (58-57) to secure a SoDak 16 berth. 

The Warriors are led by Josh Gunhammer, Kenyon McCloskey, Mackenzie Wike and Ty Valandra-Fast Horse. 


No. 7 Hill City (18-4) vs. No. 10 Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (16-5)

STURGIS — Hill City will attempt to make its first-ever state boys basketball tournament, while Cheyenne-Eagle Butte looks to make it back for the first time in 11 years Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Sturgis.

This historic season for the Rangers has included wins over St. Thomas More (52-49, 50-49), Wall (66-61), and Custer (51-48). Hill City’s four losses came against just two Class A opponents in West Central and Rapid City Christian, while the other two came against Class AA Spearfish and Sturgis Brown. The Rangers are led by juniors Nick Schroeder and Brensen Veneklasen, and senior Devin Buehler.

Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, a team that hasn’t made the state boys tournament since 2014, will try to play spoiler against the Rangers. The Braves have taken five losses to four teams this season, but have picked up some big wins over Winner (37-32), Timber Lake (80-52), Stanley County (61-48), and most recently Platte-Geddes (58-55). CEB is led by senior Easton Lawrence and juniors Damien Clown, Nehemiah Veaux, Austin Johnson, Dayson Kennedy and Jayden Marshall. Freshman Kobe White is also a key contributor. 


No. 8 Groton Area (16-5) vs. No. 9 Winner (16-5)

HURON — A pair of recent Class A qualifiers will meet at 7:15 p.m., CT, at the Huron Arena. 

Groton Area qualified for state tournaments in 2022 and ‘24. Winner qualified for state tournaments in 2021 and ‘22. 

Three of Groton Area’s five losses were against SoDak 16 qualifiers Hamlin, West Central and Lennox. Groton Area defeated SoDak 16 qualifiers Clark/Willow Lake, Milbank, Dell Rapids, Mobridge-Pollock and Aberdeen Christian during the regular season. 

The Tigers, who finished seventh at state last season, are on a six-game winning streak entering the SoDak 16. 

The Tigers are led by Ryder Johnson, Keegen Tracy, Gage Sippel, Becker Bosma, Karson Zak and Turner Thompson.

Winner also enters the SoDak 16 on a six-game winning streak. The Warriors have not lost since a 37-32 setback against Cheyenne-Eagle Butte on Feb. 8. Winner defeated SoDak 16 qualifier Sully Buttes during the regular season. The Warriors lost to SoDak 16 qualifiers Lyman, Gregory and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte. 

The Warriors are led by Shawn Hammerbeck, a 6-foot-7 senior forward. Winner is also led by Zac Olson, Landon Calhoon, Aiden Schroeder, Ryder Halligan and Carter Craven, a 6-foot-6 sophomore.
