SIOUX FALLS — There are some pretty salty Class B state meet records including the girls 3,200-meter relay (9:41.53) set by the Kadoka foursome of Peggy Porch, Teresa Parke, Joanne Herber and Michelle Parke.

Entering the state meet, four teams have run under 10-minutes including Lemmon (9:53.62), Potter County (9:53.68), Deubrook Area (9:54.27) and James Valley Christian (9:57.97). It would take a supreme effort but state track sometimes brings out special performances. 

The distance events show the potential to run at or near state meet record times. Ipswich’s Macy Heinz has the record (2:15.17) and Northwestern’s Ella Boekeleide has gone 2:15.07. Summit’s Melinda Zirbel has state meet records in the 1,600-meter run (5:04.51) and 3,200-meter run (11:02.24). Chester’s Emery Larson has run 5:05.43 in the 1,600-meter run while Boekelheide has a 5:05.78. Larson ran the 3,200-meter run in 10:50.28. 

For the Class B boys, White River’s Ethan Watson has a season's best in the shot put (60-6.5), just ahead of the meet record set by Herreid/Selby Area’s Trevor Begeman (60-02.25) in 2018. The Class B discus record is currently held by Jason Long of Harding County (187-9). Kadoka Area’s Lincoln Koehn has a best mark this season of 184-2.

Keep an eye on the Ipswich boys 800-meter relay team that just ran a 1:31.30. The current state meet record is held by Harding County (1:31.01) set in 1998. One of the oldest records in the books is the Elkton 1,600-meter relay team from 1980 (3:26.13). Deubrook Areas’s season best is 3:29.29.
