With a loaded field at this past weekend’s Mid Dakota Monster, the Custer wrestling team made one of the biggest state-wide statements.

The Wildcats racked up 167.5 points to finish sixth in a field that featured Pierre, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes, Winner and Canton (wrestled with eight grapplers). 

Custer’s Tray Weiss won the 106-pound weight class in Presho and vaulted from not being ranked to the No. 2 ranked athlete in his weight class. Landon Woodward (126) moved from No. 9 to No. 6 and Jonathon Lewis (160) moved from No. 7 to No. 2 after defeating Grayson Hanson (KWLPG, 3-2) at the Mid Dakota Monster

Weekly Notes: 

• Sisseton’s Ian Metz takes over the top spot (120) after beating former No. 1 Kasen Konstanz (KWLPG) at the Mid Dakota Monster. He is this week’s wrestler of the week. 

• Canton’s Tanner Meyers (195) takes over the No. 1 ranking after beating Levi Nightingale (KWLPG) 5-2, in the Mid Dakota Monster tournament. 

• The (220) Class B field is loaded. No. 7 ranked Tanner Davis (Hill City) had a heck of a match with No. 1 ranked Marshall Baldwin (Canton) in Presho. Davis got what appeared to be a match-winning takedown, only to lose in sudden victory in an overtime period.

• Class B (285) has major shuffling in the rankings: No change at the top with Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington’s Quinten Christensen, Redfield’s Grady Fey and Canton’s Isaac Suter all remaining at their previous rankings. Kellen Cassidy (Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney) moved up to No. 4 this week. Lyman’s Louie Thiry moved from No. 10 to No. 6. A number of wrestlers made their first appearance in this year’s rankings.
