MITCHELL — Madison pick-up player Heith Williams drove in four runs, Trey Randel struck out 10 batters and Dell Rapids PBR will face a familiar foe in the Class B quarterfinals.

Dell Rapids PBR handled the Milbank Firechiefs, 13-3, in eight innings in the Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Tuesday and it will face Cornbelt League foe Canova on Friday.

“I am really looking forward to it,” Randel said. “They have some really good guys. We have some really good guys. It will be a good battle.”

Shortly after Canova held off Kimball/White Lake, Dell Rapids PBR took the Cadwell Park field and spotted Randel five early runs. In the second inning, Williams highlighted a five-run frame with a two-run blast over the 340-foot left field fence.

The 5-0 start allowed Randel to settle in on the mound.

“It definitely brings a sense of calm,” Randel said. “Sometimes that comes back to hurt me, but it didn’t today thankfully and I just go out there to try to fill out the zone.”

Randel allowed four hits, zero earned runs, two walks and struck out 10 batters in his 6.2-inning start on 107 pitches.

“I was feeling pretty loose and I trust my teammates,” Randel said. “So I felt like if I filled up the zone, good things were going to happen, which it did. I was just going out there confident and just feeling like myself today.”

Things got a little rocky for PBR in the middle innings.

In the sixth inning, Milbank took advantage of an error by PBR centerfielder Riley Calhoon, Taylor Boerger scored on a wild pitch and Mitch Quade scored on an error by Williams.

But Randel got out of the inning when Merik Junker lined out to Calhoon for the third out.

“I just had to keep trusting them,” Randel said. “It’s baseball. It’s a game of failure so you have to trust the teammates and go out there and make some pitches. I didn’t make some pitches after some things happened. So that’s on me as well, but I trust these guys.”

The Firechiefs never scratched another run across, while PBR put the ball in play and piled up more runs.

Dell Rapids drove in one run in the sixth, five more in the seventh and finished the game early with two more runs in the eighth inning.

Williams finished 2-for-5 and drove in four runs. Drew Sweeter recorded three hits and three RBI. Brayden Pankonen finished 4-for-4 and knocked in three runs. Pankonen also struck out two batters in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Milbank finished with just four hits, with Kellen Krause, Taylor Boerger, Dom Boerger and Brady Krause recording hits. Taylor Boerger took the loss, allowing six hits, four earned runs and struck out three batters in his five-inning start.

Dell Rapids PBR will play Canova at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Class B quarterfinals.
