SIOUX FALLS — Javelin was introduced to Class B and Class A in South Dakota this season.

And that was just fine with Faith’s TyAnn Mortenson.

“I just loved it right away,” Mortenson said on Saturday. “It just felt good to me and I just competed well and I fell in love with it.”

On Saturday, Mortenson made the most of South Dakota’s newest event, winning the Class B girls javelin with a throw of 117-feet and two-inches.

“It’s really exciting,” Mortenson added. “It’s kind of unreal. It hasn’t quite kicked in yet, but it feels amazing.”

Since it was a new event for Class B and Class A, Mortenson’s mark was a meet record and she’s the first-ever Class B girls state javelin champ.

“It’s very special,” Mortenson said. “I love the sport. So I am glad they have it. It’s really special to have it.”

Mortenson, along with the other competitors, were throwing the javelin under windy and rainy conditions. But it cleared up toward the end, allowing the competitors to unleash throws well over 100 feet.

“It was a little cold for a while,” Mortenson said. “But it cleared up at the end in finals, which gave everybody a good chance. So that felt good, too.”

Mortenson was also the lone athlete from the Little Moreau Conference, located in western South Dakota, to win a state title this season.

“We are a small conference and this is a big East River town for us,” Mortenson said. “So this is really good.”
