In Case You Missed it - Groton Area's Liza Krueger dominates at weekend tournaments
Groton Area's Liza Krueger wrestling Watertown's Olivia Anderson in the semifinals of the 2024 South Dakota Class B state tournament. Krueger opened her 2024 season with five consecutive wins and two tournament titles.

GROTON — It was a very busy opening weekend for Groton Area’s Liza Krueger who won two tournament titles at 100-pounds over the weekend. 

On Friday, Krueger dominated action in winning the Watertown tournament. Krueger had three pins in the tournament including a fall over Pierre’s Shaylee Spreck (3:42) who was fourth at the state tournament (100) a year ago. Krueger pinned her way through the Top of the Rock Tournament in Dell Rapids on Saturday, including a fall over Winner Area’s Jadelynn McCall in (:53) seconds. 

Krueger, who was third at 100-pounds at the 2024 state tournament, is 5-0 on the season, all by pins, and will be one of the top contenders at this weekend’s Rapid City Invitational. 

Winner Area’s Karson Keiser (138) looks solid at Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes tournament

It is still very early in the season and wrestlers have yet to adjust to their final weights but Winner Area’s Karson Keiser looked very tough at the Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes tournament on Saturday. In the final Keiser defeated KWLPG’s Gavin Braun 10-2 for a major decision. Keiser was third at the 2024 Class B state tournament (138) while Braun was the runner-up at (126)

West River girls teams get after it at Bill Young Invitational

While Pierre and Canton have been the top two teams in South Dakota wrestling for the last four years, a number of West River teams are gaining ground. 

Spearfish came out on top in Saturday’s Bill Young Invitational scoring 142.5 points, just ahead of Sturgis (142.5) and Rapid City Stevens (133). Lakota Tech (127) and Custer (113.5) rounded out the top-five teams. 

Champions at that tournament were Jenika Leonhardt of Sturgis (100), Annalee Pierson, Sturgis (107), Madelynn Schlup, Spearfish (114), Brooklyn Smith, Rapid City Stevens (120), Cante White Bull, Lakota Tech, 126, Candice Matsuda, Spearfish (132), Kimberlyn Heisler, Spearfish (138), Sandra Moves Camp, Lakota Tech (145), Sarah Rickenbach, Hot Springs, (152), Marieda Kalahar, Rapid City Stevens, (165), Bella Morteo, Rapid City Stevens (185) and Jessica Hite, Custer (235). 

Canton looks strong at Top of the Rock Tournament in Dell Rapids

The seven-time defending Class B champions opened up their tournament schedule with a win at Saturday’s Top of the Rock Tournament in Dell Rapids. 

The C-Hawks amassed 206 points, ahead of Bon Homme/Avon (162) and Adrian, Minn., (138). Tri-Valley (131.5) and Parker rounded out the top five teams. 

Canton champions at that tournament were Landon Walker (113), Carter Kendrick (120), Zach Bartels (126), Aiden Schrempp (132) and Hunter Richmond (285).
