SIOUX FALLS — Since 1981, Jefferson’s Amy Allard has held the Class A state meet record in 300-meter hurdles (:44.60). Two athletes, Sioux Falls Christian’s Halle Braun (:44.66) and Bennett County’s Peyson O’Neill (:44.85) are both within striking distance of the oldest Class A record in the book. 

Another record that has stood the test of time is the :25.15 in the 200-meter dash run by Cheyenne-Eagle Butte’s Althea Meeter in 1991. Bennett County eighth-grader Reagan O’Neill has run :24.99 while Lennox seventh-Bergen Musser has run a :25.18 this season.

At the 2023 state track meet, Sioux Valley’s Isabelle Bloker broke Heidi Reed’s (Canton) record in the 3,200-meter run. Reed still holds the state meet record in the 1,600-meter run (5:03.16, 1991). That record will be under assault this weekend as Sioux Falls Christian’s Corrine Braun (4:54.99), Bloker (4:56.28) and Sioux Falls Christian’s Ellie Maddox (5:01.54) have all run under Reed’s record this season. 

There are several state meet records on the boys side to keep an eye on, too. In 1986, Spearfish’s Eric Mundt set the Class A state meet record in the 400-meter dash (:48.23). Hot Springs senior Braden Peterson has run :48.89. In 2023, Belle Fourche’s Sawyer Clarkson set the meet record in the 3,200-meter run (9:17.27). Hill City’s Luke Rupert has run 9:19.71 this season.
