WINNER — Winner High School’s Shawn Hammerbeck was chosen as South Dakota’s best high school football player, according to MaxPreps.com.

Hammerbeck, who recently verbally committed to the University of Nebraska, is a multi-sport athlete for the Warriors. In addition to football, he competes in basketball and track and field.

“Versatile playmaker stars on the defensive line and at tight end but is expected to transition to the offensive line at Nebraska,” MaxPreps wrote about Hammerbeck, a 6-foot-7, 250-pounder.

Hammerbeck picked Nebraska over scholarship offers from Minnesota, Texas Tech, Kansas, Kansas State, Michigan State and Oregon State. FCS powerhouse North Dakota State University and in-state school South Dakota also offered Hammerbeck.

Hammerbeck took official visits to Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Texas Tech in June. An all-state defensive lineman, Hammerbeck led the Warriors in tackles and sacks this season. On the basketball court, Hammerbeck averaged 15.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. He recently won the Class A state championship in the discus, while he also placed fifth in the javelin and also qualified in the shot put.
