Mikah Peters helps power Brandon Valley to team title at Legion Relays

PIERRE — Brandon Valley junior Mikah Peters broke both of legendary distance runner Rod DeHaven’s meet records in the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run at Friday’s Legion Relays in Pierre. 

Peters won the 1,600-meter run (4:16.41) and 3,200-meter (9:18.42) as Brandon Valley won the boys team title. 

The Lynx won that team title with 97.33 points, ahead of Rapid City Stevens (73.33) and Pierre (67). Sioux Falls Lincoln (52) and Sioux Falls Christian (52) rounded out the top five teams. 

The Sioux Falls Lincoln girls prevailed on Friday scoring 92.5 points, ahead of Brandon Valley (77) and Rapid City Stevens (69). Sioux Falls Christian (68) and Pierre (67) rounded out the top five teams. 

Other winners for the Brandon Valley boys were Landon Dulaney in the 200-meter dash (:22.21), Wyatt Melcher in the high jump (6-03). Brandon Valley’s 400-meter relay team picked up a win (:42.35). 

Custer’s Kincade Lehman was a double winner claiming the long jump (23-01) and triple jump (48-00.50). 

Other wins in boys action went to Aberdeen Central’s Carter Lust in the 100-meter dash (:11.37), Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Griffin Fischer in the 400-meter dash (:49.73), Pierre’s Caleb Morris in the 800-meter run (1:58.93), Rapid City Stevens’ Jack Day in the 110-meter hurdles (:15.13), Aberdeen Central’s Kyson Fayant in the 300-meter hurdles (:39.98), Sioux Falls Christian’s Paul Hoekman in the shot put (66-05), Rapid CIty Stevens’ Elias Gillen in the discus (171-09), Sioux Falls Washington’s Thomas Hoffman in the javelin (171-04), 

Sioux Falls Lincoln won the 800-meter relay (1:27.79), Sioux Falls Jefferson the 1,600-meter relay (3:25.10) and Rapid City Stevens the 3,200-meter relay (8:03.45).

In girls action Pierre’s Kali Ringstmeyer won the 100-meter dash (:11.86) the fastest time in South Dakota this spring. Teammate Charlee Williams-Smith won the 400-meter dash (:56.49).

Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Kenya Harris won the 100-meter hurdles (:14.94) and 300-meter hurdles (:44.75). Harris also won the triple jump (39-07 - That is the No. 7 mark in South Dakota history).

Spearfish’s Peyton VanDeest won the 800-meter run (2:14.54) and 1,600-meter run (4:51.11). 

Other winners for the girls were Custer’s Jordyn Larsen in the 200-meter dash (:25.29), Sioux Falls Christian’s Sadie Pettengill in the 3,200-meter run (10:57.97), Aberdeen Central’s Taryn Hermansen in the shot put (42-03), Watertown’s Malia Kranz in the discus (140-11), Rapid City Stevens’ Clare Ashley in the javelin (121-00), Hill City’s Ashley Ronning in the high jump (5-01) and Rapid City Stevens’ Ava Holzwarth in the long jump (18-00).

Relay winners were Rapid City Stevens in the 400-meter relay (:49.23), Sioux Falls Lincoln in the 800-meter relay (1:42.47), Brandon Valley in the 1,600-meter run (3:59.66) and Sioux Falls Christian in the 3,200-meter relay (9:07.43).
