Mount Vernon, Flandreau move on

MITCHELL — Mount Vernon took a 9-4 lead after three innings and rolled to a 13-5 win in its opening round match up with Akron in the State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Thursday night.

Bradley Dean led the Mustangs with four hits a double and a triple. Koby Larson also added four hits while Spencer Neugebauer had three hits.

Blake Faber led Akron at the plate with three hits.

Luke Tiesler picked up the win for the Mustangs — pitching 6 1/3 innings while giving up two runs on four hits.

Dylan Kirkeby took the loss — getting the start and only lasting an inning and 2/3rds. He gave up four runs on seven hits.

Mount Vernon will move on to play Flandreau after the Cardinals were 9-4 winners over Tabor in Thursday night’s second game.

Jacob Patterson, Brian McGuire and Bret Severtson led Flandreau at the plate with two hits each. Meanwhile Zach Sutera led Tabor with three hits.

Severtson earned the win, pitching six innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits while striking out three. Christian Uecker took the loss for Tabor — pitching four innings while giving up five runs on five hits and striking out four.

Tabor took an early 3-0 lead after two innings but Flandreau took the lead with four runs in the third inning and never looked back. The Cardinals would add a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning and two more in the eighth.
