ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Newell’s Kelsi Costello and Belle Fourche’s Toarin Humble shined at Thursday’s National High School Finals Rodeo. 

In the breakaway roping, Costello recorded a 2.68 seconds, finishing with the second best time in Thursday’s morning performance. Costello is currently eighth in the average (6.96).

In the saddle bronc riding, Humble scored a 70, the second best time in Thursday’s morning performance. 

Fruitdale’s Mataya Ward and Springfield’s Treyvan Talsma both captured fifth-place finishes in their performances on Thursday. 

In the goat tying, Ward ran a 7.97 seconds in Thursday’s morning performance, a fifth-place finish. In the steer wrestling, Talsma also placed fifth in the Thursday morning performance in 7.73 seconds. 

In the All-Around Rookie Cowgirl standings, Sturgis’ Arina Haugen is third with 350 points. 

In the team standings, the South Dakota boys are 11th with 1,700 points. The South Dakota girls are in 16th place with 922.50 points.
