Nov. 8 Football Roundup - Wolsey-Wessington outlasts Wall in Class 9A semifinal thriller

Wolsey-Wessington 30, Wall 28 

WALL — Caleb Richmond’s late touchdown run pushed Wolsey-Wessington over Wall in 9A semifinal action Friday night.

Caleb Richmond had two rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns, Moshe Richmond had a 1-yard touchdown reception, while Colin Hughes reeled in a 19-yard touchdown. Moshe Richmond converted the go-ahead two-point conversion on a rush as well.

Wall’s Jace Blasius scored a 5-yard touchdown run, quarterback Tanner Volmer had a pair of rushing scores, while Jace Mohr scored a 5-yard touchdown in the loss as well.

No. 4 Wolsey-Wessington faces No. 2 Howard in the Class 9A state championship on Nov. 15 at 10 a.m.


Sully Buttes 34, Canistota 28

ONIDA — Wesley Wittler accounted for all five Charger touchdowns as Sully Buttes advanced to the Class 9B state championship Friday.

Wittler carried the ball 15 times for 104 yards and three rushing scores, while completing nine passes for 220 yards and two passing touchdowns. Gavin Barber had 51 yards on 11 carries while catching three passes for 106 yards and a touchdown, Gavin Colson had three catches for 56 yards and a score, while Barber led the defense in tackles with 6.5 in the win.

Canistota’s Easton Miller racked up 111 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, Brady Scott completed five passes for 50 yards and a passing touchdown while Blaise Showers tossed a 39 yard touchdown as well. Prayden Acheson had two catches for 42 yards and a score, while Miller added three catches for 32 yards and a receiving touchdown in the loss for the Hawks.

No. 5 Sully Buttes will face No. 2 Faulkton Area in the 9B state championship on Nov. 14 at 11 a.m., CT.

Parkston 28, Freeman-Marion-Freeman Academy 22

PARKSTON — Parkston held on late to defeat Freeman-Marion-Freeman Academy Friday, advancing to its third consecutive Class 9AA state championship.

Kolter Kramer totaled 104 yards on 17 carries, Kaden Holzbauer had 15 carries for 67 yards, Carter Sommer had five carries for five yards and two touchdowns, Mason Jervik added 23 yards and a touchdown on two carries, including two catches for 24 yards and a punt return touchdown in the victory for the Trojans.

FMFA’s Riley Tschetter completed 12-of-24 pass attempts for 131 yards and a touchdown, Christopher Aasen caught five passes for 62 yards and a touchdown, Dominic Sperling rushed 16 times for 69 yards and two touchdowns, while Karter Weber caught three passes for 31 yards in the loss.

No. 1 Parkston faces No. 2 Hamlin in the Class 9AA state championship on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.


Winner 36, St. Thomas More 0

WINNER — Winner blanked St. Thomas More and secured a berth in the Class 11B state championship on Friday. The Warriors rushed for 343 yards on 53 carries. 

Karson Keiser rushed for 80 yards on 15 carries. Eli Vobr added 74 yards rushing on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns. Gus Bartels rushed for 65 yards on 12 carries and scored a touchdown. Zac Olson logged 62 yards rushing and a touchdown. Vobr completed 3-of-3 passes for 41 yards and a passing touchdown to Kellen Brozik. Keiser added 31 yards receiving. Keiser had 3.5 tackles on defense. Zac Olson, Aiden Schroeder and Vobr had interceptions on defense. 

For STM, Noah Wald completed 10-of-24 passes for 88 yards. Wald added 19 yards rushing on three carries. Kain McLeod hauled in 28 yards receiving. Ryan Neugebauer and Marty Reeve had 8.5 tackles on defense. 


Sioux Valley 28, Elk Point-Jefferson 14

VOLGA — Donovan Rose and Brock Christopherson powered Sioux Valley to the Class 11B state championship game on Friday. 

Rose racked up 218 yards rushing on 30 carries and scored a three-yard rushing touchdown. Christopherson added 123 yards rushing on 23 carries and scored three rushing touchdowns. Christopherson added four tackles and a forced fumble. Wyatt Nelson posted six tackles, while Jakob Guthmiller had five tackles. Mitchell Guthmiller had four tackles and a sack, while Rose had four tackles.

For EPJ, Keaton Gale completed 5-of-13 passes for 81 yards and threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Grayson Girard. Gale added 12 yards rushing. Beau Schmitz had an eight-yard rushing touchdown. Gunner Ewing rushed for 35 yards on eight carries. Schmitz rushed for 25 yards. Caleb Heuertz posted 14 tackles. Girard and Jace Shatswell had 11 tackles apiece. Gale logged eight tackles.

Sioux Valley will play Winner in the Class 11B state championship on Nov. 15.


Lennox 35, Dell Rapids 0

DELL RAPIDS — The Oriole defense limited Dell Rapids to just 156 total yards as Lennox advanced to the 11A state football championship game Friday.

Boston Katzer completed 11-of-15 pass attempts for 154 yards and a touchdown, Tate Gerdes rushed 17 times for 75 yards and a touchdown, Drake Mikkelsen caught seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown, Layton Smith caught two passes for 43 yards, while Katzer led the defense with three tackles.

DR’s Cael Frost completed 10-of-24 pass attempts for 71 yards and four interceptions, Cole Ruesink rushed 12 times for 41 yards, Drake Eastman had 35 yards on five carries, Tad Tjaden caught three passes for 26 yards, while Devin Lodmell had three catches for 25 yards in the loss.

No. 3 Lennox will face No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian in the 11A state championship on Nov. 16 at 12 p.m., CT.
