O'Gorman boys, Lincoln girls claim AA state track and field titles

SIOUX FALLS — When the dust had cleared following three days of track and field competition the Sioux Falls O’Gorman boys and Sioux Falls Lincoln girls were crowned Class AA state track and field championships. 

The Sioux Falls O’Gorman punctuated their title in the final event of the meet, the 1,600-meter relay. The foursome of Kellan Askew, Kyle Knoechne, Ashton Bierema and Sam Castle set a meet record (3:20.18) in winning the event 

The Knights scored 100.5 points. Ahead of Brandon Valley (90.50) and Rapid City Stevens (88). Harrisburg (63) and Lincoln (55.5) rounded out the top-five. 

Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Ali Bainbridge finished second in the 1,600 meter run (4:53.59) while Dymond Nave won the 100-meter hurdles (:14.78) and finished second in the 300-meter hurdles (:45.40) as Sioux Falls Lincoln won the AA girls track and field championship.

Boys Saturday highlights:

  • Sturgis junior Aidan Hedderman won the 110-meter hurdles (:14.47).

  • Spearfish senior Jaden Guthmiller repeated as Class AA state 100-meter dash champion (:10.59). 

  • Sioux Falls Jefferson's Griffin Wilde won the 400-meter dash (:48.99). 

  • Rapid City Stevens senior Simeon Birnbaum broke the meet record in winning the 1,600 meter run (4:02.78)

  • Brandon Valley sophomore Landon Dulaney wrapped up a monster weekend by winning the 200-meter dash (:22.21). 

Girls Saturday highlights

  • O’Gorman sophomore Libby Castelli won the 1,600 meter run Saturday (4:51.11).  

  • Sioux Falls Lincoln sprinters Ellen Merkley (:12.42) and Ella Termaat (:12.51) finished first and second in the Class AA girls 100-meter dash. 

  • Sioux Falls Washington junior Nyariek Kur was second in the 100-meter hurdles (:14.88) and won the long jump and triple jump earlier in the week. 

  • Brandon Valley freshman Jayaunna Stroh repeated as Class AA high jump champion (5-4).

  • Rapid City Stevens sophomore Brynn Nelson set a meet record in winning the javelin (136-3). 

  • Pierre’s Kali Ringstmeyer won the 200-meter dash (:26.29).
