Oct. 19 Football Roundup - Hitchcock-Tulare pulls away from Lemmon-McIntosh in Class 9B playoff opener

Hitchcock-Tulare 44, Lemmon-McIntosh 24 

TULARE — Hitchcock-Tulare pulled past Lemmon-McIntosh for a Class 9B playoff win on Thursday. 

Hitchcock-Tulare’s Erik Salmen erupted for 219 rushing yards on 31 carries and scored five touchdowns. He added 43 yards passing and a passing touchdown. On defense, Salmen had six tackles and an interception. Patrick Maynard hauled in 34 receiving yards and a touchdown catch. Blaze Binger posted 10 tackles and an interception. Brendan Nowell intercepted two passes on defense. 

For Lemmon-McIntosh, Blair Ham rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Sawyer Thompson added a passing touchdown. 


Freeman-Marion-Freeman Academy 32, Stanley County 28 

FORT PIERRE — Freeman-Marion-Freeman Academy outlasted Stanley County in a Class 9AA playoff thriller on Thursday.

Karter Weber completed 12 of 16 passes for 133 yards and threw two touchdown passes. Weber added 67 yards rushing and a score. Dominic Sperling had 27 yards rushing. Rocky Ammann hauled in six catches for 71 yards and a score. Jackson Donlan had 37 receiving yards and a score. 

For Stanley County, Colton Brady rushed for 125 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns. Broch Zeeb added 41 yards rushing and 140 yards passing. Barrett Schweitzer had 75 receiving yards.  


Gregory 46, Harding County/Bison 14

BUFFALO — Gregory picked up a Class 9A road playoff win over Harding County/Bison on Thursday.

Gregory’s Rylan Peck rushed for 242 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns. Peck added 51 passing yards and a touchdown. Gannon Thomas rushed for 156 yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown. Luke Stukel rushed for 43 yards and two touchdowns. Thomas hauled in 42 receiving yards and Colt Keiser caught a touchdown pass. Peck had six tackles and an interception on defense. Stukel had seven tackles. 

For Harding County/Bison, Rylee Veal rushed for 166 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns. Hayden Pihl completed seven passes for 116 yards. Nayati Bickerdyke posted 84 yards receiving. Bickerdyke had 10 tackles.  


Winner 36, Parker 0 

WINNER — Winner racked up 335 yards rushing en route to a Class 11B playoff win over Parker on Thursday. 

Aiden Barfuss logged 162 yards rushing on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns. Karson Keiser added 84 yards rushing and a score. Gus Bartels rushed for a touchdown. Stratton Morehart added 28 passing yards and threw a touchdown pass to Keiser. Zac Olson, Breven Bolander, Morehart and Keiser had interceptions on defense. Shawn Hammerbeck had four tackles. 

For Parker, Michael Even rushed for 28 yards on 11 carries. Landon Wieman completed 13 of 30 passes for 153 yards. Ray Travnicek hauled in 81 receiving yards on six catches. Levi Wieman had 10.5 tackles. 

 

Deuel 20, Webster 14

DEUEL — Trey Maaland’s enormous night of running the football helped Deuel to a playoff win over Webster in high school football action Thursday. 

Maaland, the starting quarterback for Deuel, carried the football 39 times for 288 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Gavin Kloos added 37 rushing yards while Owen Kloos chipped in 13 yards. 

Carson Mount and Brent Bearman each had 32 rushing yards to lead Webster. Ian Lesnar led Webster with 130 yards of passing while Martin Dorsett had one reception for 49 yards. 

 

Parkston 42, Viborg-Hurley 0

PARKSTON — Parkston blanked Viborg-Hurley in Class 9AA playoff action on Thursday. 

Kolter Kramer rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Brayden Jervik scored two touchdown runs. Carter Sommer had a touchdown run, while Mason Jervik had 63 yards on 11 carries and added a touchdown catch. Elliott Leischner had a pick-six on defense.

Canistota 58, Centerville 6

CANISTOTA — Canistota rushed for 248 yards en route to a Class 9A playoff win on Thursday.

Tage Ortman rushed for 86 yards on three carries and scored two touchdowns. Cayden Scott added 65 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns. Levi Schroeder rushed for 60 yards and a score, while Joseph Bond had a rushing score. Ortman completed 10 of 12 passes for 153 yards and threw two touchdowns to Schroeder, who had 56 yards receiving. Brady Scott hauled in 43 receiving yards. Cayden Scott posted 5.5 tackles and Brandon Kjetland had an interception. 

For Centerville, Alec Austin completed 17 of 27 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown. Covin Wattier hauled in 69 yards receiving and a touchdown catch. 

 

De Smet 61, Colome 8

DE SMET — De Smet coasted past Colome for a Class 9B playoff win on Thursday. 

De Smet’s Britt Carlson completed 5 of 6 passes for 215 yards and threw four touchdowns. He added 39 yards rushing and a score. Carlson had five tackles on defense. Kadyn Fast hauled in 87 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions, while rushing for a 45-yard touchdown run. Tom Aughenbaugh had a 36-yard touchdown reception. Ganon Henrich logged a 61-yard touchdown catch and posted seven tackles. Gannon Gilligan and Slayten Wilkinson had touchdown runs. Edger Wilkinson had a blocked punt for a touchdown. 

Avon 54, Faith 14

AVON — Avon’s Aziah Meyer rushed for 276 yards and five touchdowns as the Pirates posted a Class 9B playoff win on Thursday. The Pirates rushed for 511 yards. 

Landon Mudder, Paxton Bierema and Noah Watchorn added rushing touchdowns. Tyler Tjeerdsma logged 109 rushing yards on 11 carries, while Bierema finished with 99 yards on 11 carries.


Elkton-Lake Benton 52, Britton-Hecla 0

ELKTON — Elkton-Lake Benton blanked Britton-Hecla in Class 9AA playoff action on Thursday.

ELB’s Colt Beck completed 9 of 15 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Beck added 108 yards rushing and one more score. Riddick Westley logged 82 yards rushing and two scores. Blake DeVries had 32 yards rushing and a score. Tanner Stein hauled in 66 receiving yards, while Carson Griffith posted 47 receiving yards and two scores. Savion Stephens had 56 receiving yards. Tanner Drietz posted two interceptions on defense, while Stein had 7.5 tackles. DeVries logged six tackles. 

For Britton-Hecla, Jackson Zuehlke had 14 passing yards and Bryce Hawkinson posted 18 rushing yards. Daniel Person had 14 receiving yards. 

 

Corsica-Stickney 46, New Underwood 0

CORSICA — Corsica-Stickney rushed for 327 yards en route to a Thursday playoff win over New Underwood. 

Carter Wright racked up 179 rushing yards on eight carries and scored a touchdown. Caden Baumiller had 72 yards on nine carries and a touchdown, while Tate Tolsma rushed for two touchdowns. Luca Catapano had a touchdown run, while Driftin Mulder had a touchdown pass. Wright had nine tackles and Jesse Torticill had seven tackles.

New Underwood's Jaxson Fulton had 96 yards passing and nine tackles. 


Elk Point-Jefferson 48, Groton Area 13

ELK POINT — An explosive offensive attack helped propel Elk Point-Jefferson past Groton in the first round of the Class 11B playoffs. 

It was running back by committee Thursday as Jake Gale, Gunner Ewing and Luke Schmitz rushed for a combined 134 yards with each having a touchdown. Keaton Gale finished his night going 11-of-21 for 209 yards and four touchdown passes. Garrett Merkley caught five passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. Ashton Fairbanks had 70 yards receiving with two touchdown receptions. Carson Timmins had just one catch but it went for 68 yards and a score. 

Korbin Kucker paced Groton Area with 14 rushes for 36 yards and a rushing touchdown. Lane Tietz and Kucker combined for 156 yards passing with Kucker having a touchdown pass. 


Sioux Valley 59, Mount Vernon/Plankinton 6

VOLGA — Sioux Valley rushed for 326 yards en route to a Class 11B playoff win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Thursday. 

Donovan Rose rushed for 119 on seven carries and scored three touchdowns. Boden Schiller added 69 rushing yards and two rushing scores. He completed two passes for 35 yards and returned an interception for a score on defense. Braden Danzeisen had 40 rushing yards and a touchdown. Maverick Nelson scored on a fumble recovery and Wyatt Hardt posted a rushing score. Nelson hauled in 33 receiving yards. Schiller had nine tackles and Hudsyn Ruesink posted six tackles. 

For MVP, Brady Fox posted 48 rushing yards on 14 carries. Zach Baker logged 15 rushing yards. Isaiah Olson had six passing yards and Cain Tobin had six receiving yards. Evan Bultsma had seven tackles, while Fox had five tackles and an interception. 


Madison 48, Custer 7

CUSTER — Madison used a balanced offensive attack to earn a win over Custer in high school football action Thursday. 

Madison quarterback Cohen Hahn completed 10-of-19 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target Thursday was Shane Veenhof who caught two passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Lincoln Anderson added 76 yards and a receiving touchdown while Andrew Comes caught four passes for 72 yards. Jordan Pedersen, Caleb Hodges and Cohen Hahn combined for 139 yards rushing and three touchdowns. 

Custer managed to grind out 120 yards of rushing with Ryder Bailey accounting for 103 of those yards. Ryder Bailey and Ayden Petz combined for 25 tackles with Leighton Sander coming up with a sack for Custer. 


Dell Rapids 53, Dakota Valley 18

DELL RAPIDS — Class 11A No. 1 Dell Rapids looked every bit the part Thursday as the Quarriers rolled past Dakota Valley in high school football action Thursday. 

Senior Mason Stubbe continued his brilliant regular season with 12 rushes for 272 yards and four touchdowns. Cole Ruesink rushed for 74 yards and a score while Sutton Williams had 40 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Jack Henry passed for 46 yards.

Dakota Valley’s Drew Lukken led the Panthers with 78 yards and a touchdown. Jackson Boonstra managed 15 rushing yards and a Dakota Valley touchdown. Receiver Trae Piel caught three passes for 50 yards and a touchdown.


Tea Area 31, Watertown 15

TEA — Class 11A No. 3 Tea Area erupted for 426 yards rushing en route to a high school football win on Thursday.

Keegan DeYoung finished with a school-record 229 yards rushing on 25 carries and scored a touchdown. Brenner Konrad posted 123 yards rushing on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns. Cole McKinney added two rushing scores. Konrad added 30 yards passing. Brock Ellingson posted 24 receiving yards. Tyler Rhead, Garrett Wiebenga and Jessen Wiebenga had four tackles apiece. 

For Watertown, Spencer Wientjes rushed for 96 yards and scored a touchdown. Juven Hudson added 74 yards rushing and a score. Treyton Himmerich passed for 59 yards. Kaden Decker posted 14 tackles.
