PBR earns quarterfinal win over Dimock-Emery, advances to Class B semifinals

MITCHELL — One year after failing to qualify for the 32-team tournament, Dell Rapids PBR is onto final four. 

PBR edged Dimock-Emery, 3-1, in quarterfinal action at the Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Friday at Cadwell Park. PBR will play Canova at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in an all-Cornbelt League semifinal contest. 

In a low-scoring affair, PBR broke through in the final two innings to secure the semifinal berth. In the eighth inning, Connor Spindler and C.J. Smith delivered RBIs to give PBR a 2-0 lead. 

The Raptors, who were gunning for their second semifinal berth in three seasons, got a run back in the eighth on a Gene Kitchens RBI groundout. 

PBR’s Weston Hansen knocked in an insurance run in the ninth inning, with a two-out double into center field. 

The Raptors put runners on second and third base in the ninth, but with two outs, Josh Engquist struck out looking for the final out. 

PBR’s Trey Randel earned the win after allowing one earned run on two hits and struck out five batters in 5.2 relief innings. Brayden Pankonen got the save after throwing 1.1 scoreless relief innings. 

For Dimock-Emery, Jason Schmidt struck out 10 batters, scattered 11 hits and allowed three earned runs in a complete-game performance. 

Dimock-Emery’s Peyton Nash had two hits, while Schmidt and Colton Plagmann had hits.

Spindler had three hits, while Pankonen and C.J. Smith had two hits apiece. Chris Burke, Hansen, Riley Hoffman and Riley Calhoon each had hits.
