Pierre teams, Canton lead after Day 1 of state wrestling tournament
Canton’s Kieonna Smith wrestles Pierre’s Danni Ringstmeyer during a girls 126-pound quarterfinal match on Thursday at the State Wrestling Tournament at the Summit Arena in Rapid City. Smith won the match with a 3-2 decision win.

RAPID CITY — The Pierre High School boys wrestling team holds a slight lead over Brandon Valley after Day 1 of the South Dakota state wrestling tournament. 

Pierre racked up 93.5 points, ahead of Brandon Valley (92.5) and Watertown (90). Sturgis (82) and Aberdeen Central (59) round out the top five teams. 

Pierre and Brandon Valley both advanced eight wrestlers to Friday’s semifinals. Watertown advanced six wrestlers to Friday’s semifinals.

Canton takes commanding lead in Class B state wrestling tournament

As expected the Canton C-Hawks lead after day 1 in the Class B state wrestling tournament. 

The C-Hawks scored 87.5 points, ahead of Custer (69) and Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall Badlands Brawlers (66). McCook Central/Montrose (62.5) and Winner Area (55.5) round out the top-five teams after day one of the tournament. 

Teague Granum (126), Ashton Keller (132), Kale Ask (138), Ayson Rice (145), Josh Merkle (182), Tanner Meyers (195) and Traun Cook (285) all reached Friday’s semifinals for Canton.

Behind six semifinals qualifiers the Pierre girls lead Canton after Day 1 of the girls state wrestling tournament.

Pierre racked up 82 points, ahead of Canton (56.5) and Brookings (43). Lakota Tech (42) and Rapid City Stevens (42) round out the top-five teams after Day 1 of the tournament. 

Sydney Uhrig (106), Gianna Strangeland (132), Abbigail Lewis (142), Ireland Templeton (170), Marlee Shorter (190) and Ciara McFarling (285) all reached the semifinals for Pierre.
