SIOUX FALLS — It has been a remarkable year for Sioux Falls Lincoln javelin thrower Jack Smith.

Earlier this season Smith broke the state record in the javelin (196-3) and on Thursday Smith won the Class AA javelin throw. Smith’s winning throw of 176-3 edged Spearfish’s Sam Marcus who had a throw of 171-6.

The Brandon Valley girls got off to a great start Thursday, winning the 3,200-meter relay (9:22.21) and the sprint medley relay (4:02.68). In that sprint medley relay, Mia Wentzy passed O’Gorman’s Libby Castelli in the final few meters to secure the victory. 

Brandon Valley scored 30 points Thursday, ahead of Rapid City Stevens (17), Spearfish (16.5) and Harrisburg (16.5). 

Brandon Valley boys scored 22.5 points Thursday, ahead of Sturgis (22) and Sioux Falls Jefferson. Sioux Falls Lincoln (17) and Spearfish (16) round out the top-five.

The Sturgis foursome of Quinn Bruch, Ty Ferguson, Taylor Colunega and Ty Petrocco won the 3,200-meter relay (8:08.40), just ahead of Rapid City Stevens (8:12.39). The Yankton sprint medley team came from the second heat to win the relay. 

Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Griffin Fischer had the fastest qualifying time in the 100-meter dash (:10.58) and Sturgis senior Aidan Hedderman had the top qualifying time in the 110-meter hurdles (:14.25).
