BRIDGEWATER — Sioux Valley knocked Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan from the ranks of the undefeated on Friday.

The No. 2 Cossacks handed the No. 3 Seahawks their first defeat, a 42-6 decision in Big East Conference football action.

Sioux Valley (5-0) used another strong rushing attack to fuel the win, finishing with 354 rushing yards on 39 carries.

“It’s 11B football,” Sioux Valley coach Dan Hughes said. “Everybody runs the ball. So we are no different than anybody else, but I thought our kids had times blocked pretty dang well and our backs ran hard.”

Sioux Valley’s ground game was powered by the three-headed rushing attack of Donovan Rose (138 yards/2 TDs), Boden Schiller (106 yards/2 TDs) and Brock Christopherson (95 yards/TD).

Schiller, who also had a passing touchdown to Hudsyn Ruesink, praised the guys up front for the ground game.

“Our linemen up front had a really good push and that just helped us out in the backfield a lot,” Schiller said.

Defensively, Sioux Valley limited Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan’s rushing attack. The Seahawks (4-1) had scored 15 of their 16 touchdowns on the ground this season. BEE’s lone touchdown was a Drake Gustafson-to-Taite Klumb TD pass in the third quarter, when Sioux Valley comfortably led 30-0.

“It was just holding our ground and making sure they couldn’t run the dive on us every single play,” Schiller said about Sioux Valley’s defense. “And just being able to stop them for short gains every down.”

The Seahawks managed 91 rushing yards on 35 carries, while Sioux Valley’s Jakob Guthmiller and Skylar Trygstad both had interceptions on defense.

BEE’s leading rusher, Macklen Weber, was limited to 43 rushing yards on 17 carries. Gustafson completed 7 of 14 passes for 81 yards.

“We had a pretty good idea what their strengths were and they’re awful good,” Hughes said. “We just wanted to make sure our kids were prepared for that.”

The Cossacks were prepared in the opening stages on Friday. The Seahawks went 3 and out on their possession, and Christopherson scampered 50 yards for a touchdown run moments later.

“Things kind of broke our way early and that probably contributed to how it ended up,” Hughes said. “But it was two really good teams.”

Guthmiller’s interception setup a Schiller touchdown run, extending the lead to 16-0. In the second quarter, Sioux Valley forced a turnover on downs and a Schiller-to-Ruesink TD hookup made it 22-0.

“It’s big,” Schiller said about Sioux Valley’s start. “We got a lot of guys that just want to come out here and win. It shows that when we want to come out here, we mean business and we go to battle, especially our lineman. They just go to work every play.”

Sioux Valley chewed up the clock on its first possession of the third quarter, culminating with a Schiller TD run on 4th and goal. After Gustafson hit Klumb for BEE’s lone touchdown, Rose showed off his speed with a 53-yard touchdown run and a 36-6 advantage. Rose rounded out the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown spurt in the third quarter.

Sioux Valley will play at McCook Central/Montrose on Sept. 22. Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan will play at No. 1 Winner on Sept. 29.
