St. Thomas More girls claim first state tennis championship since 2015

RAPID CITY — St. Thomas More edged Sioux Falls Christian for the Class A girls tennis championship on Tuesday. It is St. Thomas More’s first state championship since 2015. 

The Cavaliers have finished as runner-up in each of the past two seasons. 

The Cavaliers and Chargers were knotted up at 320 after Day 1 of the state tournament. In the end, St. Thomas More scored 488 points and pulled ahead of Sioux Falls Christian (443.5.).

In singles action, St. Thomas More’s Amity Strand (Flight 3), Evie Reinicke (Flight 4) and Elliya Strand (Flight 5) all won state championships to power the team title. 


Sioux Falls Christian’s Anna Westenberg (Flight 1) won a state championship for the runner-up Chargers. 

Rapid City Christian’s Katie Palmer (Flight 2) and Vermillion’s Katie Yoon (Flight 6) also won singles championships. 

In doubles action, St. Thomas More’s Athena Franciliso and Shriya Gangineni won the Flight 1 championship. Sioux Falls Christian’s Kasey Lemstra and Eisley Roark won Flight 2 doubles title. Vermillion’s Sakarra White-Davis and Katie Yoon won the Flight 3 doubles title.
