Tea Area tops undefeated Flandreau, advances to Class A semifinals

BROOKINGS — No. 6 Tea Area upset No. 3 Flandreau 57-47 in the final game of the first day of the Class A state girls basketball tournament.

Leading the game at the end of every quarter of play, the Tea Area Lady Titans ended the Lady Fliers’ perfect season.

The two teams had an even number of turnovers at 14, but the Lady Fliers were the ones who came away on top of one category with 33 rebounds to Tea Area’s 26. There was a total of 24 fouls, 19 steals and four blocks in this exciting matchup.

Leading the Lady Titans in scoring was Ellie Clayberg with 17 points, while teammate Katie Vasecka followed with 14 points. Four other members of the team contributed to the 57 points total, those being Haidyn West (9), Mara Grant (6), Miah Weber (4) and Jaycie Babb (2).

Vasecka led in assists with five while Weber and West had two and Grant and Clayberg each added one. Vasecka and Grant stayed busy grabbing rebounds for Tea Area with eight and five.

The Tea Area offense outscored Flandreau in every quarter but the fourth where they were held to eight points to Flandreau’s 11. The largest lead for Tea was 11 in the third quarter.

For the Lady Fliers, Lily Klein led the way with 19 points and Claire Sheppard followed with 14. Others who contributed were Lizzie Pavlis (8) and Sadie Iott (6).

While the majority of rebounds came from two players for Tea Area, Flandreau had several who contributed. Pavlis (13), Claire Sheppard (5), Iott and Klein with four and Morgan Sheppard and Hannah Krull both had two.

The Lady Titans were hot from three-point range shooting over 50 percent, they were 9-14 at the free-throw line and had a field goal percentage of 48 percent.

For the Lady Fliers, they went 3-21 on three-pointers, 2-10 at the free throw line and had a field goal percentage of 38 percent.
