One of the athletes coming out of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays looking exceptionally sharp was Arlington’s Chloe Raw.

Raw held her own against schools with much larger enrollments finishing third in the open 100-meter dash (:12.14). A year after finishing second to Colman-Egan’s Daniela Lee in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash at the Class B state meet, Raw looks to be the favorite in those events with less than three weeks until the state meet.

Raw’s (:12.14) leads Lee (:12.66) in the 100-meter dash and her 200-meter dash best of :25.40 is a full second faster than Class B’s next fastest participant, Shawnteah La Croix of Aberdeen Christian (:26.43).

Ipswich boys looking like a Class B contender

It had been a relatively quiet start for the Ipswich boys, that is until they unleashed their firepower at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays.

Competing in the open long jump senior Trevor Heinz finished third in the long jump (21-10). The foursome of Kyle Hettick, Maxwell Kulesa, Casey Geditz and Heinz won the 400-meter relay (:44.33). The same foursome captured the Class B 800-meter relay (1:32.23).

Start digging a little deeper and Ipswich’s Ramsus Loken has the top Class B pole vault (13-0).

You start adding up points and it looks like the Tigers will be in the mix for the Class B team title.

Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Griffin Fischer poised to run fast times

It is readily apparent that Sioux Falls Christian’s Griffin Fischer is the next sprint sensation for the Patriots. Fischer, a junior, delighted Howard Wood fans with a second-place finish in the Special 200-meter run on Friday. His time of :21.46 is No. 9 all-time in South Dakota history. The :10.57 he ran in the 100-meter dash earlier this year is No. 10 all-time in South Dakota. On May 4, the Lincoln 400-meter relay, anchored by Fischer ran a :42.24. That is the No. 2 time in South Dakota history.

Girls 3,200-meter run rewrites South Dakota top-10

For those lucky enough to stick around for Friday’s 3,200-meter run they witnessed one of the all-time great two-miler events run at Howard Wood. All told, six athletes broke the 11-minute barrier with two of those athletes breaking into the top-ten in South Dakota history.

Spearfish freshman Peyton VanDeest pulled away over the final two laps clocking a 10:28.98, the No. 5 time in South Dakota history. Sioux Valley junior Isabelle Blocker finished second at 10:34.35, the No. 7 time in South Dakota history.
