ST. FRANCIS — The past two weeks have not been kind to the Todd County girls basketball team. COVID-19 affected Todd County's regular class schedule and the girls team was quarantined for a minute with accompanying game cancellations and very little practice for about two weeks.

On Wednesday the Lady Falcons shook off the rust on their way to an 81-33 win over St. Francis.

“This year has been a struggle,” Bob Boyd, Todd County girls basketball coach said. “It seems like every game has been postponed or canceled. You get prepared and then boom…no game.”

Entering Wednesday’s game at cross-county rival St. Francis the Falcons had lost four of five and suffered their worst loss of the season Tuesday against Winner.

Against St. Francis Todd County missed some early layups and led just 13-10 after one quarter.

“At the quarter break, I just told them to relax and play ball,” Boyd said. “They looked at each other in the huddle and said no more of this type of play. They came out in the second roaring on fire.”

Fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from Wiconi Uses Arrow, and by the inside play of Alexis Walking Eagle and Bailey White Hat Todd County went on a 31-8 second quarter run and led 44-13 at intermission.

“We had a good stretch of defensive ball pressure that got St. Francis into doing things they didn’t want to do,” he said.

Walking Eagle finished with 22 points, White Hat was right behind with 20 points. Both contributed double-digit rebounds. Sharlee Kills In Sight led St. Francis with 11 points.

“Both Bailey and Alexis and even freshman Julise Shaw had a good game on the boards,” he said. “When we struggle, many times it’s because we are not aggressive on the glass. Last night we were.”

The final score, 81-33 in favor of Todd County, improved the teams record to 8-7. Boyd said the loss to Winner got his team's attention and he hopes Wednesday’s win will translate into confidence down the stretch.

“Against St. Francis it was about attitude and playing with passion,” he said. “We had to make a mind shift last night and hopefully that carries over into tonight’s game with Kadoka and the rest of their games.”

The rest of those games include matchups with Miller, Little Wound, McLaughlin and Pine Ridge. Miller, 10-5 is the only team in the final stretch that has a winning record. Boyd said he hopes to have girls playing their best basketball when the region 7A playoffs begin.

“We have to be able to handle pressure better,” Boyd said. “If we attack the pressure, we can break it down and get some easy buckets.”
