WINNER — Winner, a town of around 3,000 people in south central South Dakota, is a high school football powerhouse and has won nine total state football championships.

It rarely produces Division I talent, but Winner High School junior Shawn Hammerbeck is a rising major college football prospect from the small South Dakota town.

“It’s unreal the opportunities that they are giving to me,” Hammerbeck said. “I can only thank God.”

Hammerbeck has received college football scholarship offers from FBS programs Nebraska, Minnesota, Texas Tech, Kansas, Kansas State, Michigan State and Oregon State. FCS powerhouse North Dakota State University and in-state school South Dakota have also offered Hammerbeck.

Hammerbeck will go on official visits to Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Texas Tech in June. He plans on making a decision this summer, before shifting his attention to his senior year of high school.

“I am handling it pretty well,” Hammerbeck said about the recruitment. “I like it. I like meeting new people and new coaches. But I got some official visits set up here in June, after those I think it will be about time to make a decision.”

What is Hammerbeck looking for in a college?

“Somewhere I can get my education that I want,” Hammerbeck said. “Somewhere where I fit in and somewhere the coaches and the people are just good people.”

Then his college football position will need to be determined. Hammerbeck, a chiseled 6-foot-7, 250-pounder, is both an offensive and defensive line prospect.

Hammerbeck’s projects as a tight end, defensive end, defensive tackle or offensive tackle at the next level.

And Hammerbeck said he’ll play wherever he is needed.

“Whatever works,” said Hammerbeck, who is a 3-star prospect according to multiple recruiting websites.

On the football field, Hammerbeck led the Warriors in tackles and sacks this season. On the basketball court, Hammerbeck averaged 15.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. He recently won the Class A state championship in the discus, while he also placed fifth in the javelin and also qualified in the shot put.
