Winner, Salem set to meet in Round 2

MITCHELL — Winner-Colome began its quest for a Class B title Sunday afternoon with a 10-3 win over South Central to conclude the first round of the 89th annual South Dakota State Amateur Baseball Tournament.

The Pheasants, who have made deep runs in the past two tournaments by advancing to both the quarterfinals and semifinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings. Winner then added three runs in the fifth and four in the eight.

South Central cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for its only runs.

Chandler Bakley led Winner at the plate with three hits while Austin Calhoun and Dillon Lambley added two hits each.

Patrick Starr picked up the win for the Pheasants, pitching seven innings while giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked three. Reed Harter pitched the final two innings, giving up three hits while striking out one.

Jayd Vanderwerff led the Storm with two hits while Aaron Sundquist took the loss, pitching three innings, giving up two runs on one hit.

Winner advances to Wednesday’s second round against Salem. The Cubs held off Colome 8-6 in Sunday afternoon’s first game.

Salem jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first inning and added a run in the third and two more in the seventh. Colome, making its first trip to the state tournament in the franchise’s third year of existence chipped away at the lead with a run in the third, two in the fourth and two more in the sixth but couldn’t get that key hit needed to push them over the top.

Cole Cheeseman led the Cubs at the plate with three hits while Rob Lind, Kyle Tuschen and Brian Duxbury had two hits each.

Shea Connot led the Chaos with three hits and Braden Gardner added two hits.
