Aug. 7 Class B Amateur Baseball Roundup - Dell Rapids PBR pounds out 15 hits en route to opening-round win over Plankinton

Dell Rapids PBR 11, Plankinton Bankers 1 (8 innings) 

BRANDON — Dell Rapids PBR’s Brett Mogen powered the defending champs to an opening round win at the Class B amateur baseball tournament on Thursday. 

Mogen struck out 10 batters, allowed three hits, one earned run and issued zero walks in seven innings. Drew Sweeter, Chris Kropuenske and Riley Calhoon had three hits apiece. Kropuenske and Calhoon drove in two runs apiece. Zack Puetz knocked in two runs and Weston Hansen added two hits. PBR tallied 15 hits. 

For Plankinton, Devin Mehlhaff had two of the team’s three hits. Dakota Munger drove in Plankinton’s lone run. Thomas Stange allowed two hits, four earned runs, zero walks and struck out zero batters in 0.1 innings for the loss. 


Garretson Bluejays 10, Volga Cormorants 0 (8 innings) 

BRANDON — Nick Bonte threw a two-hit shutout in Class B amateur baseball action on Thursday. 

Bonte struck out eight batters and walked three batters on 97 pitches. He also had two hits and drove in a run. Robin Chute, Brett Fischer, Trey Buckneberg, Scott Splett and Brady Bonte had two hits apiece. Fischer, Buckneberg and Jesse Brockhouse drove in two runs apiece. Garretson totaled 15 hits. 

For Volga, Randy Santema and Layne Lucas each had hits. Connor Gross allowed 11 hits, five earned runs, four walks and struck out one batter in 6.2 innings. 


Canova Gang 10, Elk Point Colt .45s 7 (11 innings)

BRANDON — Justin Miller drove in four runs and smacked a three-run homer as Canova rallied past Elk Point in Class B amateur baseball action on Thursday.

Miller finished 2-for-5 and belted a three-run homer to key Canova’s rally past upset-minded Elk Point. Derek Miller and Kendall Gassman finished with three hits apiece. Gassman drove in two runs. Kalub Carmichael had two hits and drove two runs. Justin Miller also earned the win, striking out five batters, allowing one hit, zero runs and one walk in seven relief innings.

For Elk Point, Logan Bobzin had three hits and drove in two runs. Jaxon Hennies had two hits and drove in a run. Bobzin took the loss, allowing eight hits, six earned runs, six strikeouts and one walk in 4.2 relief innings.
