BROOKINGS — For the third year in a row, Clark/Willow Lake’s Brynn Roehrich comes out on top.

The Cyclone junior captured her third-consecutive Class B state championship on Tuesday at Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings.

After shooting four-over-par on Day 1, Roehrich came back to shoot three-under-par on Day 2, separating herself from a tie with Miller’s Jayce Pugh along with Chester’s Jadyn McDonald to win her third individual championship.

“It feels good,” Roehrich said. “I was a bit nervous starting this one. I knew Jayce and Jadyn were seniors and I knew they would want to go out with a bang. I wanted to win really badly.”

The biggest improvement was on the back nine after shooting a 42 on Day 1 with four bogeys and two double bogeys.

“I just caught some bad breaks,” Roehrich said of the back nine struggles on the first day. “On 13, I hit the back of the green and it was firmer, bounced, and went in the water. It wasn’t even that I was hitting bad shots, I just caught a couple bad breaks which led to bigger numbers.”

But she was able to turn around the back nine struggles on Tuesday by 11 strokes with four birdies, building a double-digit cushion in the process.

“I had no idea where I was sitting. I knew at the turn my mom told me I was up six,” Roehrich said. “I went into the back nine and after yesterday happened, I was like OK let’s just keep this flowing. I didn’t rush myself and I just played my game.”

The University of South Dakota women’s golf commit cruised through the final nine holes, ending with a 67 for the day to win the state championship by 13 strokes.

“I feel like I come out and play better on the second day,” Roehrich said. “I just tell myself you can’t win it on the first day, you can only lose it. I put myself in position one and came out today and capitalized on that.

“I came out today and my goal was to play to the best of my ability and add it all up when it’s done.”

On top of Roehrich’s outing on Tuesday, the Cyclones (481) surged back in the team standings, chasing down Dell Rapids St. Mary (483) to win its first girls team title since 2010. Miller rounded out the top-3 team scores with a 491.

CWL’s Brynn Roehrich, Faith Roehrich and Mallory Nelson shot a 251 on the opening day and shaved off 21 strokes on the second day to sneak past Dell Rapids St. Mary. Roehrich was on the final hole when she found out they had taken the lead.

“My coach for the summer, Eric Stevens, always tells me to never keep track of the strokes in my head,” said Roehrich. “I hit my drive and I was getting relief and my coach came and talked to me and I didn’t even care how I was doing. I just wanted to know how the team was doing because I knew it was going to be a close race.”
