March Madness is about to ramp up. 

The South Dakota boys basketball postseason action starts Monday as teams will look to punch their tickets to the state tournaments. The Class B and A region tournaments are this week and the SoDak 16 qualifying games are Friday across the state. 

Here’s a look at the Class A region-by-region breakdown:

Class A

Region 1A

Outlook: Groton Area compiled a 17-3 record to earn the region’s No. 1 seed. 

The Tigers’ season was capped off by a 60-46 win over Class B power Aberdeen Christian in the regular-season finale.

Groton Area, which is No. 7 overall in the Class A standings, have lost to Lennox (62-52), Clark/Willow Lake (60-47) and Sisseton (54-53). The Tigers and Redmen (9-11) will play on Tuesday in the region opener. 

Clark/Willow Lake (13-7) and Tiospa Zina (10-8) are the region’s No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively. The Cyclones edged the Wambdi, 54-51, on Feb. 1 in Agency Village and a rematch looms if both win on Tuesday. 

Clark/Willow Lake plays No. 7 Webster Area (8-12) on Tuesday, while Tiospa Zina plays No. 6 Redfield (8-12) in the other first-round matchup. 


Region 2A

Outlook: Flandreau put together a 16-3 record to secure the No. 1 seed over Sioux Valley and Hamlin. 

The Fliers, who are No. 5 overall in the Class A standings, went on a 13-game winning streak after dropping a 60-56 decision against Hamlin in the season opener. Flandreau split with Sioux Valley, including a 70-40 win for the Big East Conference championship. The Fliers also dropped a 46-32 decision against Class B No. 1 De Smet on Feb. 8. 

Flandreau plays No. 8 Flandreau Indian (1-12) in the region opener. 

Sioux Valley, which was last season’s Class A state runner-ups, went 15-5 to earn the region’s No. 2 seed. The Cossacks rattled off six straight wins in the middle of the season to bolster their record. Sioux Valley closed its regular season with a 70-69 win over Lower Brule in its finale. 

The Cossacks defeated Hamlin (59-52) on Jan. 11 and a potential rematch takes place Friday if they both win Tuesday.

Sioux Valley plays No. 7 Great Plains Lutheran (8-12), while No. 3 Hamlin (14-6) plays No. 6 Elkton-Lake Benton (11-9). The Chargers enter postseason play on an eight-game winning streak. No. 4 Deubrook Area (13-7) plays No. 5 Deuel (10-10) in the other first-round game. 


Region 3A

Outlook: West Central’s 16-4 record earned it the region’s No. 1 seed and No. 4 overall in Class A. 

The Trojans enter region play on a six-game winning streak and their four losses were against formidable foes Winner (67-55), Lower Brule (67-59), Dakota Valley (73-60) and Tea Area (68-62). West Central plays No. 8 Baltic (3-17) on Tuesday in the region opener. 

Dell Rapids secured the region’s No. 2 seed with a 14-6 record. The Quarriers defeated last year’s Class A state champs Sioux Falls Christian on Jan. 11 and a potential rematch looms if both teams win Tuesday.

Dell Rapids plays No. 7 Tri-Valley (5-15) on Tuesday, while No. 3 Sioux Falls Christian plays No. 6 McCook Central/Montrose (8-12). No. 4 Garretson (9-11) plays No. 5 Madison (8-12) in the other first-round contest. 


Region 4A

Outlook: Dakota Valley, the last undefeated team in Class A, secured the No. 1 overall seed.

The Panthers (20-0) have picked up wins over formidable Class A teams Tea Area (72-61), West Central (73-60), St. Thomas More (48-46), Sioux Falls Christian (60-54), Lakota Tech (75-57), Vermillion (79-57), Dell Rapids (75-55) and Lennox (73-59) to pad their résumé. 

Dakota Valley, which is gunning for its third straight state tourney, plays No. 8 Parker (7-13) in the region opener. 

Perennial power Tea Area went 14-6 during the regular season to earn the region’s No. 2 seed. The Titans is No. 6 overall in the Class A standings and played four Class AA teams this season, finishing with wins over Yankton (55-53) and Aberdeen Central (54-51). 

Tea Area defeated No. 3 seed Lennox (71-64) on Feb. 11 and a potential rematch happens if they both win Tuesday. Tea Area plays No. 7 Beresford (8-12), while Lennox plays No. 6 Canton (9-11). No. 4 Vermillion (14-6) plays No. 5 Elk Point-Jefferson (10-10) in the other first-round contest. 


Region 5A

Outlook: After moving up from Class B, Hanson earned the region’s No. 1 seed with a 15-5 record. 

The Beavers, who are No. 12 overall in Class A, finished the regular season on a five-game winning streak. Hanson’s record includes wins over formidable foes Ethan (64-45), Parkston (43-37), Canistota (61-60) and Platte-Geddes (59-39). Hanson narrowly defeated No. 4 Wagner, 52-50, on Feb. 1. They’ll face each other again if Wagner defeats No. 5 Bon Homme (6-14) on Tuesday. 

Mount Vernon/Plankinton went 14-6 in the regular season to earn the region’s No. 2 seed. The Titans, who are No. 14 overall in Class A, won three straight games in early February over Gregory (63-60), Hanson (53-50) and Chamberlain (63-38) to bolster its record. MVP’s last defeat was a 69-50 decision against No. 3 seed Parkston and they’ll meet again if both teams win Tuesday.

MVP plays No. 7 Andes Central/Dakota Christian (2-18), while Parkston (13-7) plays No. 6 Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (5-15) in the other first-round contest. 


Region 6A

Outlook: Winner finished with a 19-1 regular season record to earn the region’s No. 1 seed. 

The Warriors also locked up the No. 3 overall seed and enter region action on a seven-game winning streak. Winner’s lone defeat was against Class B Gregory, while it picked up quality wins over West Central (67-55), Parkston (56-51), Chamberlain (42-26), Madison (48-45), Pierre (46-43) and Mount Vernon/Plankinton (60-51).

The Warriors, who were a 2021 state tourney team, play McLaughlin in their region opener on Tuesday. 

Stanley County finished 13-7 to secure the region’s No. 2 seed, while Chamberlain finished 12-8 to earn the No. 3 seed. The Cubs edged the Buffaloes, 53-47, on Feb. 3 and they’ll meet again on Friday in both win their first-round games. 

Stanley County plays No. 7 Crow Creek (7-13), while Chamberlain plays No. 6 Dupree (8-11). No. 4 Mobridge-Pollock (8-10) plays No. 5 Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (8-10) in the other first-round contest. The Tigers and Braves split during the regular season.


Region 7A

Outlook: Lakota Tech finished 14-5 in the regular season to hold off Red Cloud and Little Wound for the region’s No. 1 seed. 

The Tatanka enter the region play on a six-game winning streak, including a 79-73 win over Class B power Lower Brule on Feb. 10. Lakota Tech is ranked No. 11 overall in the Class A standings. Lakota Tech’s also season includes win over Region 7A foes Red Cloud (73-67, 67-57) and Little Wound (92-89), 

Lakota Tech plays the No. 4 Todd County (9-10) vs. No. 5 Bennett County (7-11) winner on Friday. 

Red Cloud (14-6) and Little Wound (14-6) are the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively. The Crusaders won the regular season meeting by a 72-42 decision on Jan. 17. They will play again if both teams win on Tuesday. 

Red Cloud plays No. 7 St. Francis (3-16) and Little Wound plays No. 6 Pine Ridge (4-15) in the other first-round contest. 


Region 8A

Outlook: Perennial power St. Thomas More is once again Region 8A’s top seed. 

The Cavaliers went 18-2 during the regular season, with their two losses against top teams in Class A (Dakota Valley, 48-46) and Class B (De Smet, 36-30). STM rattled off winning streaks of nine, four and five games in between the two losses. Its season included wins over formidable foes Rapid City Christian (48-39), Custer (67-50), Red Cloud (56-36) and Dell Rapids (52-41).

The Cavaliers also defeated teams from Wyoming, Nebraska and Tennessee during the season. 

St. Thomas More plays the No. 4 Hot Springs (13-7) vs. No. 5 Custer (10-10) winner in the quarterfinals. 

Rapid City Christian finished 15-5 in the regular season to secure the region’s No. 2 seed. The Comets head into postseason with a four-game winning streak, while their last defeat was against Belle Fourche (64-54) on Feb. 8. They will meet again if both teams win on Tuesday. 

Rapid City Christian plays No. 7 Lead-Deadwood (1-19), while Belle Fourche plays No. 6 Hill City (7-13) in the other first-round contest.
