Class A Roundup - Flandreau powers past Groton Area to advance to semis

Flandreau 50, Groton Area 36

RAPID CITY — No. 4 seed Flandreau picked up a first round win over No. 5 seed Groton Area in the Class A tournament on Thursday.

Tash Lunday led the Fliers with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Chase LeBrun recorded 12 points. Liam Streitz added eight points.

The Fliers will advance to the Class A semifinals and play Dakota Valley at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Groton Area was led by Jacob Zak with 12 points, while Jayden Zak scored eight points. Kaden Kurtz and Tate Larson each scored six points.

The Tigers will play Sioux Falls Christian in the consolation semifinals at noon on Friday.


Dakota Valley 62, Sioux Falls Christian 56

RAPID CITY — Top-seeded Dakota Valley outlasted No. 8 seed Sioux Falls Christian in the opening round of the Class A tournament on Thursday.

Isaac Bruns led the Panthers with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Randy Rosenquist scored 16 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Sam Faldmo and Jaxson Wingert each added eight points. Wingert also added seven boards.

Dakota Valley will play Flandreau in the semifinal round at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Sioux Falls Christian was led by Ethan Bruns with 22 points, while Brooks Nelson tallied 14 points. Logan Schipper scored seven points, while Nathan Koole added five points and nine rebounds.

The Chargers will play Groton Area in the consolation semifinals at noon on Friday. 


St. Thomas More 63, Lakota Tech 53

RAPID CITY — Trailing 36-25 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter the Cavaliers of St. Thomas More took it up a notch. The Cavaliers opened up a double-digit lead late and advanced to the Class A semifinals Friday where they play Sioux Valley.

Three players reached double-figures as the Cavaliers pulled away late. Cade Kandolin finished with 24 points, six rebounds and three assists. Caleb Hollenbeck added 18 points and six rebounds while Ian Clewley chipped in with 15 points and five rebounds. 

Lakota Tech was led by Jordan Whirlwind Horse who hit 3 of 4, 3-pointers on his way to a team high of 18 points. Triston LeBeau finished with nine points, Beau Donovan added eight points with Marvin Richard III adding seven points. 

Lakota Tech faces Winner in Friday’s consolation bracket. 


Sioux Valley 58, Winner 54

RAPID CITY — Sioux Valley junior Oliver Vincent knocked down four free throws in the final 11 seconds as the Cossacks earned a win Thursday at the Class A state tournament. 

Vincent hit four, first-half three pointers and finished with a game high 27 points. Sophomore Alec Squires finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Hayden Ruesink added seven points while Parker Puetz scored five points. 

The Cossacks advance to Friday’s semifinals where they will play St. Thomas More. 

Blake Volmer led Winner with 20 points and six rebounds. Aiden Barfuss added nine points while Ethan Bartels and Jackson Vesely each contributed eight points. 

The Warriors face Lakota Tech in Friday’s consolation bracket.
