Class A boys basketball region previews

The march to the Class A boys basketball tournament in Sioux Falls starts March 4. 

The Class A boys basketball tournament is March 20-22 in Sioux Falls, and teams will start their postseason pushes March 4 and 7 with region play. The SoDak 16 contests are March 11. 

Here’s a look at each Class A boys region tournament:


Region 1A

Groton Area (15-5) was the only team to finish with a winning record, easily securing the No. 1 seed in Region 1A. As a result, the Tigers earned the region’s first-round bye and will play Britton-Hecla or Sisseton on March 7. 

Groton Area enters the postseason on a five-game winning streak, and its five losses were against quality Class A opponents: Hamlin, West Central, Lennox, Dakota Valley and Vermillion. 

Groton Area defeated both Britton-Hecla (63-31) and Sisseton (73-41) during the regular season. Sisseton won the regular-season meeting against Britton-Hecla, 54-45.

Aberdeen Roncalli (9-11) earned the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 Redfield (2-18) in the first round. The Cavaliers defeated the Pheasants (63-34) in the season opener. 

No. 3 Milbank (10-10) will play No. 6 Webster Area (5-15) in the other first-round contest. The Bulldogs defeated the Bearcats (68-40) on Feb. 21. 

March 4 

No. 4 Britton-Hecla (9-11) vs. No. 5 Sisseton (7-13), 7 p.m., CT, Britton-Hecla School District 

No. 2 Aberdeen Roncalli (9-11) vs. No. 7 Redfield (2-18), 6 p.m., CT, Aberdeen Roncalli 

No. 3 Milbank (10-10) vs. No. 6 Webster Area (5-15), 7:30 p.m., Aberdeen Roncalli 

March 7 

No. 1 Groton Area (15-5) vs. Britton-Hecla or Sisseton, TBD 


Region 2A

Hamlin’s 18-2 regular-season record earned the Chargers the No. 1 seed in Region 2A, and the No. 2 seed overall. Hamlin, which won last season’s Class A state championship, will also receive the first-round bye in Region 2A, which has all seven teams with double-digit victories. 

The Chargers enter postseason on a 13-game winning streak, including wins over quality Class A foes Rapid City Christian, West Central and Clark/Willow Lake. Hamlin’s two losses were against Houston, Tennessee, and Class A No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian. 

Hamlin will play the Florence-Henry (13-7) vs. Sioux Valley (11-9) winner on March 7. Hamlin defeated Sioux Valley (59-39), but did not play Florence-Henry during the regular season. Sioux Valley and Florence-Henry did not play during the regular season.

Clark/Willow Lake (15-4) is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 Great Plains Lutheran (10-10) in the opening round. The Cyclones defeated GPL (70-46) on Jan. 27. 

CWL’s season included a 58-55 win over quality Class A foe Lennox (58-55) at the Hanson Classic. The Cyclones' four losses have come against Groton Area, Castlewood, Sioux Falls Christian and Hamlin. 

No. 3 Deuel (14-6) plays No. 6 Elkton-Lake Benton (12-8) in the other first-round contest. Deuel edged Elkton-Lake Benton (46-44) on Jan. 28.

March 4

No. 4 Florence-Henry (13-7) vs. No. 5 Sioux Valley (11-9), 7 p.m., CT, Florence School District 

No. 2 Clark/Willow Lake (15-4) vs. No. 7 Great Plains Lutheran (10-10), 7 p.m., CT, Clark

No. 3 Deuel (14-6) vs. No. 6 Elkton-Lake Benton (12-8), 7 p.m., CT, Deuel 

March 7

No. 1 Hamlin (18-2) vs. Florence-Henry or Sioux Valley, TBD 


Region 3A

West Central (17-3) finished ahead of four 11-9 teams to secure the No. 1 seed in Region 3A, which has five teams with double-digit victories. The Trojans secured the region’s first-round bye and will play Flandreau or Madison on March 7. 

West Central dropped three games during a daunting schedule, with losses against Sioux Falls Christian, Castlewood and Hamlin. The Trojans picked up wins over quality Class A foes Vermillion and Lennox. 

West Central defeated Flandreau and Madison during the regular season. Flandreau defeated Madison (60-46) on Jan. 17. 

Dell Rapids (11-9) is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 Tri-Valley (4-16) on March 4. The Quarriers defeated Tri-Valley (57-35) on Feb. 6. 

No. 3 Baltic (11-9) will play No. 6 Garretson (9-11) in the other first-round contest. Baltic defeated Garretson (50-40) on Feb. 4. 

March 4 

No. 4 Flandreau (11-9) vs. No. 5 Madison (11-9), 7 p.m., CT, Flandreau 

No. 2 Dell Rapids (11-9) vs. No. 7 Tri-Valley (4-16), 7 p.m., CT, Dell Rapids High School 

No. 3 Baltic (11-9) vs. No. 6 Garretson (9-11), 7 p.m., CT, Baltic 

March 7 

No. 1 West Central (17-3) vs. Flandreau or Madison, 7 p.m., West Central High School

Region 4A

Class A power Sioux Falls Christian (19-1) went undefeated against South Dakota opponents this season, and earned the No. 1 overall seed in Class A. The Chargers will also receive the first-round bye in Region 4A, which has five teams with double-digit wins.  

Sioux Falls Christian will play either No. 4 Dakota Valley (13-7) or No. 5 Beresford (12-8) on March 7. The Chargers defeated Dakota Valley (88-66) on Jan. 30, but did not play Beresford during the regular season. Dakota Valley defeated Beresford (78-60) in the season opener on Dec. 17. 

Sioux Falls Christian’s schedule included victories over quality Class A foes Lennox, West Central, Hamlin, Dell Rapids, Rapid City Christian, Vermillion, Clark/Willow Lake and Pine Ridge. The Chargers also defeated Class AA teams O’Gorman, Yankton and Tea Area, while their lone defeat was a double-overtime loss against Iowa’s Western Christian. 

Lennox (16-4) is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 Canton (2-18) on March 4. Lennox defeated Canton (90-23) on Jan. 2. The Orioles are on a nine-game winning streak.

No. 3 Vermillion (17-3) will play No. 6 Elk Point-Jefferson (7-13) in the other first-round contest. Vermillion defeated EPJ (59-25) on Jan. 21. Vermillion’s last loss was against Sioux Falls Christian, but have since rattled off nine straight victories. 

March 4

No. 4 Dakota Valley (13-7) vs. No. 5 Beresford (12-8), 5:30 p.m., CT, Dakota Valley High School 

No. 2 Lennox (16-4) vs. No. 7 Canton (2-18), 7 p.m., CT, Lennox High School 

No. 3 Vermillion (17-3) vs. No. 6 Elk Point-Jefferson (7-13), 5:30 p.m., CT, Vermillion High School 

March 7 

No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian (19-1) vs. Dakota Valley or Beresford, TBD 


Region 5A

Hanson put together a 13-7 regular season, and earned the No. 1 seed in Region 5A. The Beavers received the first-round bye as a result. 

Hanson will play No. 4 Mount Vernon/Plankinton (5-15) or No. 5 Scotland/Menno (4-16) on March 7. Hanson defeated Mount Vernon/Plankinton (60-53) and Scotland/Menno (72-44) during the regular season. 

The Beavers began the season with five straight victories, but later dropped games against Class B teams Parkston, Viborg-Hurley, Howard, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket, Bridgewater-Emery, Freeman and Wessington Springs during the regular season. 

Mount Vernon/Plankinton and Scotland/Menno did not play during the regular season. 

No. 2 Wagner (10-10) plays No. 7 Bon Homme (3-17) and No. 3 McCook Central/Montrose (10-10) plays No. 6 Parker (3-17) in the other first-round contests. Wagner defeated Bon Homme (62-40) and McCook Central/Montrose defeated Parker (55-32) during the regular season. 

March 4

No. 4 Mount Vernon/Plankinton (5-15) vs. No. 5 Scotland/Menno (4-16), TBD 

No. 2 Wagner (10-10) vs. No. 7 Bon Homme (3-17), TBD 

No. 3 McCook Central/Montrose (10-10) vs. No. 6 Parker (3-17), TBD

Region 6A

Cheyenne-Eagle Butte held off Stanley County and Mobridge-Pollock for the No. 1 seed in Region 6A. As a result, the Braves earned the region’s first-round bye and will play Platte-Geddes or Miller on March 7.

CEB (15-5) won five of its last six games to secure the region’s No. 1 seed. The Braves also rattled off six straight wins in January to bolster their record. The Braves defeated Miller (69-56) on Dec. 14, but did not play Platte-Geddes during the regular season. 

Platte-Geddes (13-7) and Miller (11-9) did not play during the regular season. 

Stanley County (15-5) earned the No. 2 seed in Region 6A, which has five teams with double-digit wins. The Buffaloes will play No. 7 Crow Creek (7-13) on March 4. Stanley County defeated Crow Creek (66-49) on Jan. 30. 

Stanley County’s 2024-25 regular season was highlighted by winning the Jones County Invitational on Jan. 16-18. The Buffaloes also pieced together a nine-game winning streak during the regular season. 

No. 3 Mobridge-Pollock (12-8) will play No. 6 Chamberlain (5-15) in the other first-round contest. The Tigers defeated the Cubs (73-43) on Jan. 31.

March 4

No. 4 Platte-Geddes (13-7) vs. No. 5 Miller (11-9), TBD 

No. 2 Stanley County (15-5) vs. No. 7 Crow Creek (7-13), 7 p.m., CT, Fort Pierre 

No. 3 Mobridge-Pollock (12-8) vs. No. 6 Chamberlain (5-15), 6 p.m., CT, Mobridge-Pollock High School 

March 7 

No. 1 Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (15-5) vs. Platte-Geddes or Miller, TBD

Region 7A

Winner held off Pine Ridge and St. Francis the No. 1 seed in Region 7A, which has five teams with 10 or more wins. 

Winner (15-15) will play the Little Wound (12-8) vs. Mahpiya Luta (10-10) winner on March 7. Winner defeated Mahpiya Luta (60-40) on Jan. 4, but did not play Little Wound during the regular season. 

Winner enters the postseason on a five-game winning streak, and its losses have come against Dakota Valley, Parkston, Lyman, Gregory and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte.

Pine Ridge (12-8) is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 Lakota Tech (4-16) in the opening round. Pine Ridge defeated Lakota Tech (97-56) on Feb. 8. The Thorpes faced a gauntlet of a schedule, having lost games against quality foes Rapid City Christian, Lennox (twice), Viborg-Hurley, Vermillion and Sioux Falls Christian. 

St. Francis (14-6) is the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 Todd County (9-11). St. Francis defeated the Falcons (87-62) on Jan. 18. 

March 4

No. 4 Little Wound (12-8) vs. No. 5 Mahpiya Luta (10-10), 6 p.m., MT, Little Wound 

No. 2 Pine Ridge (12-8) vs. No. 7 Lakota Tech (4-16), 6 p.m., MT, Pine Ridge

No. 3 St. Francis Indian (14-6) vs. No. 6 Todd County (9-11), 7 p.m., CT, St. Francis Indian 

March 7 

No. 1 Winner (15-5) vs. Little Wound or Mahpiya Luta, 7 p.m., CT, Winner 


Region 8A

Rapid City Christian (18-2) is Region 8A’s No. 1 seed, and the No. 3 overall seed in Class A. The Comets receive the region’s first-round bye as a result.

Rapid City Christian will play either No. 4 Custer (15-5) or No. 5 Lead-Deadwood (7-13) on March 7. Rapid City Christian defeated Custer (69-65) and Lead-Deadwood (74-54) during the regular season. 

The Wildcats defeated the Golddiggers (74-51) on Feb. 20. 

Rapid City Christian’s two losses were against Class A No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian (71-62) and Class A No. 2 Hamlin (71-59) in back-to-back games in January. Rapid City Christian’s season was highlighted by winning its second Lakota Nation Invitational in the past three years. The Comets handed Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley a 59-38 setback on Feb. 15 at the Corn Palace.

Hill City (16-4) is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 Hot Springs (4-16) on March 4. Hill City defeated Hot Springs (55-25) during the regular season. 

The Rangers’ losses have come against West Central, Rapid City Christian, Spearfish and Sturgis. Hill City enters the postseason on an eight-game winning streak, including wins over St. Thomas More and Custer in back-to-back games. 

St. Thomas More (15-5) is the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 Belle Fourche (5-15) on March 4. The Cavaliers defeated the Broncs (69-21) on Jan. 7. Three of STM’s five losses have come against South Dakota teams Rapid City Christian, Hamlin and Hill City. STM clipped Custer (53-50) on Jan. 16. 

March 4
